In 2013, Hillis is now on his second team since then and will now play for the league minimum salary. Hillis signed a one-year deal today to serve as a backup running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for the league minimum (which for Hillis, as a sixth-year player drafted in the seventh round, will be $715,000).

The fall from grace is not as sudden as it sounds. While Hillis was on the cover of "Madden '12", that game typically names itself after the year to come. So it was based on a productive 2010 season that Hillis was voted to the Madden cover in 2011, while the game's nomenclature designated itself for 2012.

The Buccaneers have the luxury of Pro Bowl running back Doug "Muscle Hamster" Martin ahead of Hillis on the depth chart. In his rookie season last year, Martin posted 1,926 all-purpose yards.

Even Hillis' "Madden '12" cover kind of requires an asterisk. Hillis beat Aaron Rodgers in a fan vote thanks to a concerted effort by Packers fans to keep Rodgers from winning, to help their quarterback avoid the Madden curse. Then in the final, Hillis beat Michael Vick -- whom you realize is something of a controversial figure.

Aaron Rodgers and Michael Vick may be looking at Hillis right now and thanking they're lucky stars that they didn't win the "Madden '12" vote.
