The New York Yankees placed troubled, young pitcher Phil Hughes on the 15 day disable list today after another poor outing against Detroit. After his last start, everyone suspected Hughes to be sent down to Scranton or Tampa. However, the Yankees decided to declare Phil Hughes ineligible for the next 15 days with a "strained oblique." Anyone who has been watching Hughes pitch this season would want to believe he was hurt. But, we all know this apparent freak injury has been forged by the New York Yankees.Instead of doing the smart thing and sending him down to Triple A, the Yankees did not want to hurt his precious confidence, even though he appears to possess none. The Yankees feared having the failure tag placed on Phil Hughes. So they did the only logical thing, and placed Philip Hughes on the disabled list.
Ian Kennedy, the other prospect whose stock is falling rapidly, will not suffer the same fate as Hughes. If Kennedy goes five shaky innings again tonight, he will be either sent down to the minors or stay in the Majors because no one wants to see Kei Igawa pitch.
Rest assured, hopefully Phil Hughes comes back at "full health" and pitches to his full potential. And with Hank Steinbrenner at the helm, this potential has to be reached this year. There are no "non-playoff" seasons in Hank's complex mind.
