It was just an exhibition game. It was just an exhibition game. It was just an exhibition game. It was just an exhibition game.Ok, now that I've gotten that out of my system, let's try not to overreact to the Philadelphia Flyers losing to the Philadelphia Phantoms, their American Hockey League (AHL) minor league affiliate on Tuesday night.
But seriously, how the hell does an NHL team lose to their own minor league team?
Perhaps the first problem was that the game wasn't played in the Wachovia Center. The Flyers were 4-0 in their home arena in the preseason, and 0-5 everywhere else. This one was played at the Spectrum, where the Flyers played for 30 seasons, before leaving in 1996.
Maybe this isn't really a bad sign for the Flyers. Maybe their future is just SO bright, their minor league players are SO unstoppable, and they will just be SO good in 2-3 years that they couldn't help but lose to this juggernaut that is the Philadelphia Phantoms. At any rate, there really is no nice way to spin this one. No matter how much this game didn't matter, an NHL team should never lose to an AHL team, ever. This is not a case of parody, or "Any Given Sunday", or any other foolish cliche. The WORST player on the Flyers should be better than the BEST player on the Phantoms at his position. Things like this should never happen.
