I'm going to ecshew the gossipy non-story on Tom Brady as long as I can, and discuss a quarterback that actually is injured. Since I spent most of last week calling Philip Rivers a jackass, it's only fair he gets all the credit in the world for his toughness. We were told last week that the former North Carolina State star had a knee injury that likely included some ligament damage. On that ground, his performance Sunday is to be applauded despite the fact Norv Turner should have given Billy Volek a few series.
But that wasn't the extent of Rivers' injury. He had arthroscopic surgery last week to remove what remained of his ACL, in order to make it partially possible for him to play Sunday. So let's be clear, he played in Conference Championship game without his ACL. Not injured ... without.
“It's more an uncomfortable feeling than anything,” he said. “I think that had no negative impact on my play. ... I was going to play unless there was no way I could go. That's part of being a leader. You've got to be able to play through injuries, be there for the guys. I appreciate the fact they're singling me out, but there are a lot of guys out there that played hurt all year.”Alright Philip, you get some points back from me. We know you're a man on the field, just stop being a child on the sidelines and I'll really start to respect you.
