Phoenix Coyotes Move to Hamilton Ontario Not Ruled Out
Jim Balsillie One Step Closer to a Seventh Canadian NHL Team
Yesterday, Jim Balsillie, his lawyers and the lawyers for the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes met in court in front of Judge Baum.

Of course, this being a court room, no decision was made, but the move to Hamilton and Copps Coliseum was not ruled out. Instead, Judge Baum asked what kind of relocation fee the NHL and Gary Bettman would be asking for.

Balsillie was not expecting the request and was not prepared with an immediate answer so the information will be obtained and they will meet again in court.  That date has not been set, as the respective lawyers await instructions from the Judge, but Balisllie moves forward, finding a song to support his efforts and naming June 19th "Make it Seven Day" across Canada.

Put them back in Winnipeg.

I'd love to see another team in Canada, but what the judge and Mr. Balisillie keep overlooking is that, the good folks in Toronto and Buffalo to say nothing of the NHL, may not take kindly to said team encroaching on their territory. Move back to Winnipeg or Quebec (you know, larger cities that didn't have competing franchises within a hundred miles)!  But to put a team in a small market like Hamilton, just because it's in Canada, is ludicrous!

Oh yea, did the judge also forget that little $700 million lease termination penalty hanging over their heads too?

It would be nice to see them go back Winnepeg. They have a new 15, 015 seat arena, and Commisioner Bettman is all for it. This current group wants the team to play in Hamilton, Ontario. Either way, Canada, the sports home, will be rewarded. The City of Phoenix must be upset, the Coyotes were a very good team, and competed well. Going to play the Coyotes was never, this Red Wings fan will tell ya.
And, what about the $180 million arena that the Coyotes, now only six years old.? The only other tenants are the Arizona Sting, a lacrosse team.
Expansion in sports was over the edge, and even though the Coyotes were a transfer from Winnipeg, another empty buiding will mean the City of Phoenix will look for another transfer, of an expansion team to occupy the building.

When was the last time a team from Canada won the cup?  Their thinking is that more teams in the sports home will equal a cup.  Am I right?

No, you're not exactly right.  The thinking is one can grab this team and run it to a Canadian market where, because hockey is essentially the national sport of Canada, they could make a lot more money than they are in AZ, which actually isn't saying much.  While my guess is, they could do better in Hamilton, ON than in Glendale, the NHL won't let it happen because, unlike baseball where the inmates run the asylum, the league does have some control over their owners and doesn't want to lose a team in a large US market.  Keeping a team in AZ might someday help grow the sport in the US. Moving it to Hamilton, Ontario will not, but it will adversely affect two established franchises (Toronto and Buffalo)...

Also, moving to Hamilton, though it may be in Canada isn't necessarily an improvement.  Yes, it's in Canada, but Quebec and Winnipeg have much larger fan bases and a proven track record, something the NHL will certainly consider if they do let the team move....

I understand your point, I was merely making a joke about how the birthplace of hockey has endured such a long cup drought.

There are an awful lot of Canadian players on those winning NHL teams, and vice versa, so the location really doesn't say much about the calibre of the players or the team, just the fan base and the money involved.

Moving a team out of the US would just be awful for the NHL if they are at all interested in the game growing and prospering in the United States.  (where the money is, incidentally)

The NHL top brass need to put a quick stop to all this.
