Our weekly look at the individual AP Ballots is back again for this season. Who was the biggest homer? Who doesn't make any sense? Who actually (gasp!) deserves some credit? This week's beef: Penalizing one team for poor performance against a lower team but not another, ranking Appalachian State, and mass overreaction to the Ol' Ball Coach's win in Athens.
South Carolina 4th? It took very little time to find the worst ballot this week. I usually go directly to the four California voters as I'm bound to find something special. Check out this ballot from Jon Wilner (San Jose). That was a big road win for the Gamecocks between the hedges. True. What I did not see was the 4TH BEST TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. Alabama 9th! Uh huh. South Florida 10th? Wow, I guess Auburn was one of the best in the country. Wilner also dropped Louisville down to 18th for a close win against Mid Tennessee St, but kept Wisconsin in the top 5 for a close win against UNLV. Typical voter behavior.
J.P. Giglio (NC) also might have a bit of man crush on the OBC with a 7th place voting.
Who looked better -- Oregon or Appalachian State? According to Dave Goren (NC) he was more impressed by the 34-32 victory than the 39-7 ass kicking. Dave has Appalachian State ranked 13th in the country. Oregon 23rd. I'm sure the locals appreciate your support for the Boone, NC school, but at least acknowledge what Oregon accomplished if you think so highly of Michigan.
B.G. Brooks (CO) was not impressed with Oklahoma. He has them at 8th, right behind Wisconsin and Louisville. I've thought long and hard and can't figure out any logical reasoning for this other than having something against the Sooners.
Geaux Tigers! Unsurprising, and I completely agree, but it's worth noting both of the Louisiana voters had LSU #1.
David Birkett (MI) clearly still wants to give a lot of respect to Michigan. He has Oregon 8th! Might as well have just kept the Wolverines in there at 25, Dave.
Joseph Hawk (NV) did a good job of making sure his local team was still playing a ranked Hawaii team. The 15th team in the nation barely beats Louisiana Tech in overtime.
Thank you Joe Person (SC) for taking the Gamecocks win in stride.
There are plenty more ballots ripe for the picking. It's still early, so we're looking forward to this weekend's game to give us a better picture. Feel free to pick apart the voters in the comments.
