Pitt Panthers Defeat Connecticut Huskies 70-60, Possibly Lock Up #1 Seed in NCAA Tourney
Down Goes UConn...AGAIN! Panthers Are Pretty Much A Lock for A #1 Seed in the NCAA Tournament Now

Yes, I'm on hiatus, but sometimes you just can't pass up an opportunity to gloat, and this is one of those times.

On Feb. 16, the Pitt Panthers made school history when they went to Hartford and defeated Jim Calhoun's Connecticut Huskies 76-68, toppling the #1 team in the country for the first time ever.  They were ranked #4 at the time.  Pitt then beat Depaul, which is a walk in the park, and went to Providence, where the Friars pulled off the upset after Pitt had risen to #1 in the polls for the 2nd time this year.  That cleared the way for UConn this week.  The season finale for Pitt was a rematch with UConn at the Pete, and this time it was again a battle of powerhouses as expected, between #1 and #3 in the country.

For the Huskies, Hasheem Thabeet had the upper hand inside this time with a double-double, 14 points and 13 rebounds.  A.J. Price led the Huskies with 19 points, and Jeff Adrien just missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Both teams shot horribly from 3-point land, each making a total of 4 3-pointers the entire game, 4-14 for the Huskies and 4-20 for the Panthers...yikes!  Good thing both teams had more success inside the arc.  That's quite possibly one of the ugliest 3-point performances I can remember for 2 teams put together in a long time.

Foul shooting was no better for UConn.  Normally it's Pitt that screws up at the line, and as a fan, I've grown accustomed to the Panthers blowing late leads because they can't make free throws.  Today, they made 6 of them, but only had 9 chances the entire game.  UConn on the other hand was half-a$$ed, shooting 10-19 from the foul line.  Those misses can prove costly, and it certainly hurt the Huskies in this game.

For the Panthers, Dejuan Blair had a career night against UConn last time, but today he was fairly quiet with 8 points and 8 rebounds, and yes, for Dejuan Blair, that's a bad game.  However, the Panthers were fortunate enough to get big performances out of other guys.  Brad Wannamaker had 13 points, a welcome surprise since he's going to have to step up next year when Fields and Young graduate.  Speaking of Levance Fields, he did play today, and had the kind of game the Panthers needed with a double-double of his own, 10 points and 12 assists.  Sam Young led everyone with a tremendous double-double, 31 points and 11 rebounds.  It was an incredible performance for the 2 outgoing starting seniors, and was exactly what the doctor ordered to beat the Huskies for a second time this year.

Man...what a great game.  The Final score does not indicate how good it really was.

For some strange reason I am still pretty sure UConn will advance farther in the NCAA Tournament than Pitt.  Pitt is a good team however for whatever reason they seem to play like national champs against UConn.

It is not a strange reason. UConn has Calhoun who knows how to navigate the tournament better than any other coach. I'd put Coach K and Tom Izzo right behind Calhoun as the #2 and #3 torunament coaches. Jamie Dixon is a good guy, and I wish him luck, but I'd take Calhoun and his experience (combined with UConn's talent) as the team to go deeer in the tournament than Pitt.

Pitt locked up a #1? I'd think so, but if for some reason Pitt goes out in the first round of the Big East tournament and UConn wins it then I think that would bump Pitt off the #1 line.

Now with a Louisville win tonight, Louisville wins the Big East regular season outright

I understand, Bryan.  Words I hoped would never come out of your mouth.  But I understand.  I will  forgive you THIS TIME ONLY.

You know that this WVU fandom is fpr this game only.  Of course, I think if Louisville does win this game, they're guaranteed a #1 seed along with Pitt.  UConn would be the scapegoat in this case having lost to Pitt twice.

I'm sorry, Bryan.  Ok,  well I'm not sorry.  Pitt's still a 1 seed in the dance, so you hve something to look forward to.

In their past four games, Marquette has played UCONN, Pitt, Louisville, and Syracuse.  Out of those, I honestly believe the only team Marquette would've lost to with Dom James was Pitt.  IMO, they are the best team in the conference.

Marquette always makes me nervous.  They've been a perennial thorn in Pitt's side since they beat the Panthers in the Sweet 16 and made it to the Fina Four back in 2003 with Dwayne Wade.

Pitt IS the best team in the conference.  Unfortunately, their record did not allow them to claim the regular season outright. Young, Fields and Blair are a force.  Love ya, Bryan.  I'm just glad we have the respect for each other and for each other's teams to know that either one could win it and deserve it.

Hey Christi, my best bud who is a huge Cards fan said he thought of a better scenario for Louisville. Something about he hopes they are a #2 seed where the would play in Akron and then Indy..He said that would be better than being the #1 seed out West. Sound right to you?

This is certainly the best Panthers team I've ever seen, but I knew they wouldn't go undefeated, even though it was very possible.  I remember guaranteeing in the BE preview I wrote back in the fall that the regular season winner would have at least 2 losses in conference play because the whole conference was going to be a crapshoot.  I think any of the top 8 teams are capable of winning the BE tournament, and I'd love to see 9 teams make it into the NCAA tourney, but that would require a miracle by Cincy or Notre Dame.

I'd agree.  Indy is only two hours away so that would be like homecourt advantage.  Akron's about 4 hours away and our fans travel.  So Yeah...that's a great scenario.

I wouldn't be surprised if 3/4 of the final four was Big East.....

Yeah..... don't bet the house on that one. Big East is good, but it is not as if the Big East is light years ahead of other conferences... like the ACC. Besides, if George Mason can do it anyone can do it so I wouldn't say that being the best in the Big East or the ACC is any kind of a guarantee that that team is a lock for Detroit.

Nobody is guaranteeing it.  She's saying it would be no surprise if that happened, and it wouldn't be.

See Kramer's comment.  And I'm not a betting woman.
