I keep trying to give Dave Wannstedt more time to prove everyone wrong, but after tonight there's no changing my mind. Wanny is a horrendous game management coach. For anyone who remembers his Wannstedt's years with the Bears, you're well versed in poor in-game decision making. Nothing has changed. I present to you tonight's overtime period with Navy.
First, the important background information. Navy has just kicked a field goal in the 2nd OT to take a 48-45 lead over the 'Stache's Pittsburgh Panthers. Pitt has run for 227 yards on the night, with the panthers share coming form LeSean McCoy (32-165, 3 TD).
Ball at the 25, freshman QB Pat Bostick completes a 16 yard pass. 1st and goal at the 9. Time to pound it in. McCoy carry down to the 3. 2nd down. McCoy carry to the 2.
3rd and goal from the 2. Pitt's offensive line outweighs the Navy d-line by 40 pounds on average. Chances are pretty good you can get another 2 yards in 2 plays on the ground.
Wannstedt opts for the pass. Incomplete. 4th and goal from the 2. Now, if I'm making the call I just go ahead and kick the field goal. But I'd entertain the idea of giving the ball to my star running back.
So on 4th down what does Pitt decide? A pass. Not just any ordinary pass, a fade route. A FADE ROUTE with a true freshman QB. Forgive the metaphor, but I'd equate that to doubling down on a 19.
Dave Wannsted, you my friend are a horrible football coach. That is all.
