Top 10 Pittsburgh Penguins Fights of the 2007-2008 Season
With the Pittsburgh Penguins recent Stanley Cup loss still lingering in my nose I decided it was time to get pumped up again awaiting the NHL draft in 4 days. I didn't know what to do though, everything I kept thinking of was the final 3 seconds of Game 6 where we almost tied it up, almost. Then I read this great article from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette recapping the games of the season and adding YouTube videos as a visual narrative. The link is posted below. Anyways, I saw a video of Gary Roberts crushing Ben Eager of Philadelphia and decided it was time to make some highlights. I turn you to HockeyFights.com. I watched 44 fights (41 Reg./3 Post) to give you these highlights, enjoy.
#10 - Sidney Crosby vs. Andrew Ference (Boston Bruins)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRTF9F31ezY
I just had to put this up. Sid the Kid's first fight and he actually drew blood. My respect for Crosby grew 10 fold when I saw the fight. Phenoms usually don't need to fight, but the fact that he can step up to the big leagues once a year makes me smile.
#9 - Big Georges Laraque vs. Krys Barch (Dallas Stars)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10Ce__ou5Mk
A quick fight, but intense none the less. BGL destroys Barch with his deadly left handed assault. Paul Steigerwald says they have never fought before this match, and it looks unlikely Barch will drop the 'laundry' with BGL again.
#8 - Big Georges Laraque vs. Brian McGrattan (Ottawa Senators)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUuEuuiaugc
I had trouble not making this the 10th video because of the shortness of the bout, but did you see McGrattan? He wanted nothing to do with BGL after a hit or two. Atleast he knew he wanted to live to fight another day.
#7 - Gary Roberts vs. Andy Sutton (New York Islanders)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhDoWaINp88
Gary Roberts is rediculous. Sutton is like the late giganthopithicus compared to Roberts, but Scary Gary manages to either knock out Sutton or made him see stars, and I am not talking about Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, and well Chuck Norris.
#6 - Ryan Malone vs. Jason Smith (Philadelphia Flyers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3dq7RvnKZU
This may seem to you to be a boring fight and maybe an even fight, but per shots landed, Ryan Malone shows us all his off season boxing program worked.
#5 - Jarkko Ruutu vs. Brandon Dubinsky (New York Rangers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jD8onkV3V7U
I love how Ruutu waits for the opportune time to strike. And when he does, it's deadly. Dubinsky countered a good bit and landed a few, but in the end it was no match for RUUUUUUTUUU!
#4 - Big George Laraque vs. Riley Cote (Philadelphia Flyers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGiJ4gDrSYA
In Cote's rookie NHL season he had 24 fights. I guess he thinks the NHL is like a prison on the ice? Ruthless, gutless, hockey players. Well he was half right, Laraque made him his bitch before Cote tackled him to the ice.
#3 - Ryan Malone vs. Mark Bell (Toronto Maple Leafs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErfhJfDUtGk
Bell did a pretty good job here. He atleast got Malone's helmet out of the way. Malone broke his nose four times for the Penguins this season. I am glad he got to deliver it back for once.
#2 - Jarkko Ruutu vs. Darcy Tucker (Toronto Maple Leafs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DelLPm7lntQ
Tucker landed a few shots, but I think his last barrage was done in a semi-unconcious state. Did you see Ruutu pummel him. Bet Tucker wasn't smiling like he was the beginning of the fight when he was RUUUUUTUUUUUUUED!
#1 - Gary Roberts vs. Ben Eager (Phildelphia Flyers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fuznwQ58bU
Gary Roberts is as timeless as his brutal right hand. His victim this time is Ben Eager from Philadelphia. Eager can normally hold his own, but why don't you leave fighting up to 41 (soon to be 42) year olds. What a leader!
Well I hope you liked my list, feel free to comment. Sorry all of the fights couldn't it on here, otherwise it wouldn't be a list. Peace out homies!
