Plaxico Burress Reports To Giants Practice, May Have Had Reason For Having Gun
Your Daily Plaxico Update: He May Have Had A Somewhat Legitimate Reason For Packing Heat
READ MORE:
Because I know everyone is desperate to know what's going on with Plaxico today, here's an update. According to an unncessarily frantic ESPN SportsCenter update, it seems that Plax actually reported to Giants practice today, per team rules, to receive treatment for his injured hamstring. Not sure if the Giants training staff has dealt with bullet wound treatment as well, but hey, there's a first time for everything.

If you're wondering what Burress was doing at practice, he posted a $100,000 bail and was given a court date of March 31. Which means we have 4 full months to wonder what exactly will happen to him.

Also of note, it appears that there may actually be a somewhat legitimate reason for why Plax was carrying a gun. Apparently Plax's teammate Steve Smith was robbed at gunpoint on November 24th.

Smith went out with friends on the night of Monday, Nov. 24, the day after the Giants beat the Cardinals in Arizona. He arrived home early last Tuesday morning - the Giants had the day off - and he was held up, apparently by the driver who took him to his home in a gated community in Clifton, N.J., according to a league source.

Shortly after being dropped off, Smith had a gun pointed to his head and was ordered to give up his jewelry and cash, which he did. The assailant then left the scene, and Smith called police
.

According to a league source, Plax was well aware that Smith had been robbed. Naturally, it's pretty easy to connect the dots here.

And knowing what happened to players like Sean Taylor and Richard Collier, maybe we jumped the gun - so to speak - on coming down so hard on Plax.

I'm not saying that what Plax did was absolutely justfiable, but it makes what he did slightly more understandable. Well, all except for the part about him not putting the safety on and shooting himself in the leg as a result. But, you know, that's just a minor detail.

Aren't there bodyguards for this sort of thing? I'm sure Plax could find someone who's licensed to carry a gun who would be more than happy to follow him around in the club and take care of his protection for like $50/hour.

I havent really posted my opinion on this yet but... Yeah he shot himself but Sean Taylor, Darren Williams, Steve Smith, Richard Collier, these guys are obviously targeted for robbery and getting murdered. I think professional athletes should be able to carry protection with them. Its not in clubs that these things happen. It's outside of them. Clubs arent the problem per se'

The thing that sucks about this is that the law is the law and its hard to make an exception when the law is meant to keep guns out of the wrong peoples hands and thats understandable but its an impossible goal to  try to get guns out of the criminal's hands. Oh well.

I think you make a very valid point. And I think most of us hopped on Plaxico rather quickly without fully understanding everything. Still stupid to bring an unlicensed pistol into a club in your sweats, but I actually do understand it better now because of Smith's situation.

Yeah great job at getting that story sir. It is stupid but at the same time its a life or death situation. Id break the law to save my life without question.

As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Plax has every right to be concerned and every right to protect himself, but when ones carelessness and lack of foresight hinder that then supersedes the good intention.

That really doesnt matter in the case though. He shot himself is irrelevant to the reasoning of him having a gun.

Like I said in a different article. If he gets off then his only punishment is to take the class and get his license. Get registered. And then the NFL should have the players go and get registered. They all have guns I assume. But get registered. Take a safety class on guns.

Carrying a gun may be understandable in certain circumstances, but you are right, how about at least registering it.  That's the part that seems shady to me.  Besides wearing sweat pants to a night club....

you mean stay home like Eddy Curry and his family?  and Sean Taylor?  Fact is that when you are a public figure and people know you have money that's always going to make you a target... that's why you do what Pat said and get a bodyguard or five...

i'd hire 50 cent and crew.....

We should all sympathize with all of the pro athletes and give each of them a weapon, because none of them can afford to have an entourage like Britney Spears ..........

Who's in the same tax bracket, has more people chase her more often, and who is much smaller and weaker.

Sorry Plax!!  Protect yourself man!  With an unlicensed gun even!

F'n genius.

Plax's logic is flawed, but at least we can see where he is coming from.  Quite frankly, I don't think these guys should be going out to clubs period.  It isn't fair, but these guys are being targeted and especially at clubs.  These guys have big enough houses and plenty of money, if they want to have a good time, have their guys over, invite some girls, and get as drunk as you want at their own place.  Its about the safest alternative they have.

This is tough call for me...The Sean Taylor case hurt me pretty bad when you see his wife and daughter without their father 4-Ever! I agree that PLAX should have registered the Gun and that the NFL should help facilitate that process. I also agree that NFL players have been targets, so probably best to take some classes on Self-Protection....But if I feel my life and/or property may be in "immediate" danger, I'll use whatever weapon I have access to at the time. If I'm an NFL star with some $$$$, I'd keep it in the bank at all times. Ever heard of a DEBIT CARD??? Let someone take it, call the cops on a cell phone and cancel it right away...If not, the card can be traced if someone tries to take money off it...Take off the DIAMONDS when in public maybe too or hire yourself a bodyguard before you whip out a Pistol in public.

So true...I wonder if PLAX felt he may lose some of his "GANGSTA" if he hired one...Bottom line though you are right. Why not hire someone trained to carry a legal weapon and trained to use it when necessary.

Bottom line is he didn't register the gun or have a concealed carry permit. Which is against the law. Plus then he compounds it by putting the gun in his waistband and drinking. That usually is a bad combination, alcohol and a loaded gun. Now in all his wisdom he could be in jail for a minimum of 3.5 years if convicted. Nice way to sabotage your career Plax. I am not against anyone wanting to protect themself, but do it lawfully. Not too mention if he was gonna go clubbing get a bodyguard and avoid situations like this. Clearly he isnt a Mensa

12/2/08

Here's the key, and people have already said it...he didn't have a permit for the gun.  If he wanted to protect himself, he should at least have enough brains to register the damn thing.  That's what he's being charged with, and that's not going to change whether his court date is in 4 days or 4 months.

That's true, there's no way to prove he went there with a gun with the intent to use it.  The problem is it went off and everyone then knew he had the gun.  That led to the discovery that he didn't have the permit for it, which is the part he can't get out of.

The somewhat funny (yet not at all) thing is all the other people who are getting in trouble.  Pierce and the hospital, although I can't figure out how the club is getting away with it since they apparently knew he had the gun.

Anyone can carry a gun on them, but you have get a permit (like me!!) for it first.  It's not expensive, $75 in Oregon so it can't be much more unless you live in mabye California.  And I'm not sure how it is in NYC, but in Oregon you still can't take any firearm into anywhere that serves alcohol or be using alcohol while in posession of your firearm.  I'm just trying to say that there aren't that many hoops to jump through and it's pretty inexpesive to be legal.

Another thing to really show how stupid Plax was and how he doesn't know s*** about handling firearms.  On the model of guy he had on him, the safety for the gun is part of the trigger so he had to have his hand on the gun and his finger on the trigger, which is something I would slap the crap out of someone for doing if I saw them doing it.  On top of that he had a round in the chamber which is the biggest mistake you could make.

How he was conducting himself was beyond retarted and I hope that they're able to throw the book at him because retards that don't know how to handle firearms but still pack them around are more dangerous than most criminals with guns!!!

With the way he was basically begging to get out of Pittsburgh, I'm glad they didn't try to keep him.  I wanted to punch his face through the TV when I saw his interview before the Steelers/Giants game when he said "they didn't want my services anymore."  You're darn right they didn't, because you made it clear you didn't wanna be there anymore, Plax!

ANYONE  dumb enough to shoot themselves doesn't need to be carrying a gun weather it is licensed or not.

One issue he should have known beforehand was the mandatory minimum prison time in New York state for doing this.  That's why I agree that he should have hired a bodyguard.  He'll go to prison even if his intentions were pure.  The judge will have no wiggle-room to consider the context.

heres my aspect on it

if my teammate was robbed at gunpoint BY HIS LIMO DRIVER i would be mistrustful especially after ALL of the recent murder related deaths in the NFL, bottom line he's in New York people, id attempt to bring something to protect myself too. This is america and he has the right to bear arms, maybe he could have taken a class, or got his concealed weapon permit but the fact is His teammates robbery happened roughly a WEEK before, im not NEAR as busy as Plax but i doubt I would have gotten into a class and permit before a week was up.

im not saying he was right in the publics eye, but for his family, friends and fellow teamates he did right, not in shooting himself but in attempting to protect himself. No LAW or person will EVER tell me that I cannot protect myself, if that means that i think im gonna get robbed or killed so i take a gun and "break a law" so be it. My safety comes first and i have that right as does Plax for the simple fact hes not out shooting people, hes protecting himself.

It was stupid (shooting himself, not using the safety), it was illegal, but it was right to him to carry a gun and protect himself i cant get mad at him for that. However he is lucky HE DIDNT Shoot someone other than himself.

as far as the giants go recovering from this, he hasnt really played this year ANYWAY so it doesnt make a difference, however giants fans should worry about Pierce going down with him as there goes the heart of a defense, that would be the most tragic part of this

I agree that he has the right to protect himself, but he should know that guns are not toys and aren't something you should nonchalantly have on your person, especially if you don't know how to use it safely.  The way he conducted himself with that gun is one of the dumbest, most epic fails I've ever even heard of and he deserved to shoot himself and he deserves to go to jail if found guilty!!

Having said that, he's making some serious cheddar with the Giants so he could have hired a bodyguard.  That seriously would take about 5 min to do if he went through the teams front office.  In fact, I'm willing to bet if he went and talked to the team about fearing for his safety, the team would have hired 4 or 5 bodyguards for him to go out with.  Another solution is that he could have done something legal, like take a karate class, or carry a baton, or a tazer, or a stun-gun, or a can of bear mace..... all of which are legal to carry without a permit or special liscense (in Oregon at least)!!

It's morons like this that make owning/carrying a gun so taboo because they're too stupid to learn how to use it or even realize that they don't know how to use it!!  My concealed weapons class took me about 45 min in a classroom and another hour at a shooting range, it isn't exactly time consuming or difficult and it's way beyond irresponsible to not do it legally.

yeah no doubt i completely agree, Lol but you are a rational person, this is the same guy whos been acting like a dumba$# all year, i really dont even think hes bright enough to look ahead at the fact he was gonna go out that night, Matter of fact I KNOW hes not bright enough HE SHOT HIMSELF lol.

he easily could have not thought about it until they decided to go out at that point he has to make a decision go out and get robbed or take a gun.....see what im saying, not saying it was right in anyway because it was in FACT irresponsible, stupid etc. but the fact remains when your going out that door and fellow players are being robbed, are you really gonna stop yourself from the one time of the week your not traveling, playing, practicing, gameplanning, etc. to take a night off.....a night you wont get again for a while.....i wouldnt but then again my permits are all in order anyway.

i agree with you man completely i just dont see it as one sided, i can see where hes coming from and at the same time KNOW that hes completely in the wrong.
