Plaxico Burress was known as a complainer and a thorn in Pittsburgh's side when he played for the Steelers. Then he went to New York City to play for the Giants, and seemed to stop causing problems. He still didn't always use his height to his advantage, but he's played better for the Giants in the last 4 years. This year, however, Burress has started his shenanigans again, and this time, he went too far.Earlier this year, Plax was suspended for not showing up to team practices/meetings, and we found out later that he was accused of being a wife beater, but that was just the beginning. He's also spent time out of the lineup due to injury, and he's been fined also. But Friday night in Manhattan, Plax shot himself out of a Giants uniform, literally. He and Antonio Pierce were in a Manhattan night club. Somehow, Plax shot himself in the leg with his own gun. What's worse is Plax didn't have a permit for said gun. Antonio Pierce tried to hide that gun, but it has since been recovered. Plax spent 12 hours in a NYC hospital. He'll be okay physically, but his career in the Big Apple may not be.
Burress's lawyer said the receiver plans to turn himself into authorities on Monday and plead not guilty to criminal possession of a weapon. This is the part that could kill Plax's NFL career...possessing a gun without a permit is a felony. The gun laws in New York are pretty tough, and if convicted, he could face up to 7 years behind bars. For anyone watching The Blitz on Sunday night, Tom Jackson hit the nail on the head, and I agree - I don't care who you are, you should not get special treatment if you are put on trial for a crime. Too often, we've seen Hollywood celebrities, singers, and athletes get a slap on the wrist because they have a big contract and are famous. I certainly hope Michael Vick's situation was a precedent for not showing any mercy to someone because he/she makes $30 million.
I for one hope Plax has the book thrown at him, and Antonio Pierce should be charged as well for concealing that gun, if he indeed tried to hide it. If I'm the owners of the Giants, this is the last straw with the troublemaker Burress. Luckily for the Giants, his off-field troubles haven't been a distraction on the field, as the team is 11-1. I'm going to hope that this moron gets what's coming to him for a) bringing a gun into a night club where firearms weren't allowed, and b) not having a permit for the gun in the first place. He deserves to see some jail time, and I hope he gets it and learns a lesson.
Until next time, The Blitzburgh Pit Stop is glad Plax didn't get seriously hurt, but also nominating him for the NFL's dumbass of the year.
BK over and out
