About Me:
I have recently started contributing to the columns at www.nflgridirongab.com and at www.cowboysgab.com. I encourage anyone to check out what I am writing over there, but if you are afraid to check out new places I will still be continuously contributing here as well. While I still enjoy long walks down short piers and going up the ol' smelly creek with out a paddle, I have grown tired of grapefruit monkeys in my cheerios.

Politics, Sex, Religion and Sports?
by Nate

There are three things that I was taught, as a youth, that we are no to talk about: Politics, Sex and Religion.  At the age of 12 you could throw not talking about sex out the window.  It was a common subject matter amongst boys, and find that even as an adult it's something guy often talk about.  Religion could be thrown out the window by the time I was 15, and considering I went to a Christian university, it was common practice there to talk religion, and that was an area I was a formidable debater.  Politics has always been another passion of mine, a common talking piece and a great way to start a conversation (though you might be warned it's also a good way to make enemies).

These three things have two things in common, in that they are all based on philosophy and they are all polarized topics.  Philosophy is nothing more than one's educated opinion based off of learned moral principals through early development, world views, and personal experience.  Because so many things are mixed into what makes up a philosophy it could be said that it is neither fact nor fiction and in many cases, especially dealing with religion can neither be proven nor disproven.

Religion is primarily faith based.  Though it is probably the most powerful philosophy amongst the three.  Your religious views often weighs in heavily in both your political views and your views on sex.  Though not always, as many religious sects have both it's more fundamentalists on one side of the spectrum to the non-traditionalists on the other side of the spectrum.  From Niche's "God is Dead" to Voltaire's "If there was no God we would need to invent one" religion is a subject that has been on the mind of men and philosophers for centuries.  The debate on religion has been so powerful, it has even brought countries to war; ala the Crusades and Israel/Palestinians.

Sex is another fan favorite.  Supposedly if all people were interested in the opposite sex this wouldn't be a problem, but that has never been the case nor does it mean if there weren't homosexuals we'd all be happily ever after and able to talk about sex.  Until the 1960s till around 1970s it was taboo to even talk about sex.  Pregnant women were never referred to as pregnant even their state was merely referred to as condition.  We are not so bad off anymore, but there are still people that think even mentioning sex is horribly wrong.  Nevermind the fact that it is the normal and most common way (thankfully) for human reproduction.  The science behind it is not the problem however, as it is the fact that everyone has a different view as to what is socially acceptable and what is not.

Continuously, and we'll seen it more specific down the road we are going to see questions asking "Who would you rather have an office McCain, Hillary, or Obama?"  Politics will always get you into debate.  We tend to split parties Republican and Democrat, but there are actually quite a few more.  Politics is based on the most amount of philosophy of any of these topics.  It's not the Backwood uneducated Christian right vs. the Tree Hugging, Al Gore Worshiping Left, as we all tend to make it out to be.  It's more those who believe things should be ran one way based off of their moral value and world views vs.  people who think the world should be ran another way based on their moral value and world views.  Everyone has moral values and a world view, but we do not all see things in the same light.  The United States however is living proof that no one party can really destroy the nation beyond repair, at least not with out the consent of the opposing party.  Political views are not based on fact, though some ideas may work better than others, really how well they work might also be up for debate because it would be opinion.

Where does sports come into all of this?  On this site alone, I have found that all of these topics pale in comparison to some of the debates I have had on FanIQ just defending my team.  Pit sports fans against each other and some of the most heated debates will come out of it.  I have been in bars where Packers fans have wanted to start fights with me because their team was losing.  Never once has someone attempted to throw a punch at me for badmouthing Hillary Clinton, but sports can do that.  Soccer has been known to cause riots and so has basketball for that matter.  Let's no leave out Philly fans either, they would be upset with me if I forget their honorable mention.  So should sports be added to the three things to not talk about?  It's certainly polarized enough, it may not be entirely philosophy, but doesn't sports in away breed it's own philosophy?  Even if it were on the list though, it would just be one more thing I am not supposed to talk about, that I'll still talk about.
