Portland Trailblazers Are Considering Trading Travis Outlaw For Michael Conley
The Blazers Could Trade Travis Outlaw For Michael Conley Any Day Now

Man is this ever interesting news. The word out of Portland right now is that the Blazers are seriously considering trading Travis Outlaw to get their hands on Michael Conley. As I'm sure you probably remember, Conley and Oden played basketball together for years together in AAU, high school, and at Ohio State. And apparently, that's exactly why the Blazers want Conley, because they think he can motivate Oden like no one else can.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports!:

[Portland GM Kevin] Pritchard knows that Conley has the credibility to get in Oden’s face when he needs a push, and that’s played an important part in his trade explorations.

While the trade could be done straight up, that would leave a glut of point guards on the Blazers and it wouldn't satisfy the Memphis Grizzlies' needs either. So a few more names are popping up as part of the deal.

The salaries of Outlaw and Conley would allow for a one-on-one swap, but both teams want to include additional players and contracts to satisfy other needs, including Portland’s Sergio Rodriguez and Memphis’ Hakim Warrick and Javaris Crittenton. It is unlikely that this trade will happen if it’s a straight-up exchange of Outlaw and Conley.

Trading Rodriguez would obviously open a spot for Conley, even though my guess would be that Rudy Fernandez wouldn't be too thrilled by that. But the trade also makes Jerryd Bayless more or less useless, even though some people believe he was one of the best point guards drafted in this past draft. Because frankly, this move begs the question of why would you trade for a young point guard with potential when you already have one sitting at the end of your bench? Well, it's obviously because of Conley's connection to Oden, but that move would make Bayless even more expendable. My guess would be that if this deal happens, Bayless may ultimately get moved too, unless the Blazers want to make the bold move of trying to develop both Conley and Bayless while forcing Steve Blake to sit - which I can't see happening.

The other question is can Warrick replace Outlaw? At least from a points perspective, the answer is yes. However, their games are fairly different, although that's because Warrick has been forced to play power forward in Memphis. In Portland, thanks to LaMarcus Aldridge, Warrick could move back to what would be his more natural position, small forward, which would also be vacant thanks to Outlaw leaving.

In total, this trade actually makes a fair amount of sense for both teams. Memphis gets a very good point guard in Sergio Rodriguez, who needs more minutes than what he's been getting in Portland, and they get a great player in Travis Outlaw. Either he or Rudy Gay would have to play power forward for the Grizzlies, but that's a solveable problem.

Meanwhile, the Blazers reunite Conley and Oden, who together may jump start each other, and they get a fairly decent replacement for Outlaw as well.

Personally, I think this move hurts the Blazers a bit at point guard at this point in time, as I think Rodriguez is a better player than Conley currently, but it's a gamble on the future, and not a bad gamble to make in reality.

This whole trade does admittedly raise some questions about Oden though. It's rare that you hear of a team trading for a guy specifically to help a player mentally on the current team. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever heard of that.

But I guess if Conley and Oden get to play together, and raise each others level of play, then the Blazers could care less about what anyone thinks. Either way, it'll be interesting to watch what happens if this deal goes through.

Drafting Jerryd Bayless was incredibly stupid anyway.  They should've picked Brandon Rush, especially now if they plan on moving Outlaw.  As moronic as this may sound, Pritchard is the most overrated GM in sports.  Luck and a good owner are the only reason why the Blazers are where they are.

So two huge busts are going to play together? Sweet. Slow news day?

I bet Jerryd Bayless is thrilled.
I'd be pissed if I was Bayless. But it's way too early to label Oden and Conley busts. Especially Oden. Dude's played 10 games.

I agree. He's been lauded for no reason and he might be the worst drafter/evaluator of talent around. Webster was what, 6th or 8th overall? Batum is terrible too. Outlaw is the second best player on the team and they're shipping him out.

Oden and Conley aren't BUST busts, just overrated and taken way too high based on what they can do. Oden is only a solid defensive player - nothing more. Conley is a two stuck in a one's body.
Batum is acctually playing really well, he deserves to start over Outlaw.  They won't move Martell Webster because they just gave him a big extention and that would be kind of stupid to do, even though that's what would really make more sense.  That, and just trade Bayless for Conley if you want to throw talent away.

This is a terrible trade for Portland simply because Rodriguez is a better PG than Conley and can run a Nash/Stoudemire or Paul/Chandler type of Pick-n-Roll with Oden.  Conley is nothing special while Rodriguez and Fernadez are effective and make the whole team better!

I think a lot of the other GM's in the NBA are just so bad that Pritchard looks like a genius.

Sadly, probably true.

Webster was not Pritchards pick he was not the GM, it was John Nash's pick. Pritchard picked Roy, Aldridge and Oden. Outlaw is maybe the 4th best player on the Blazers. Batum is by no means terrible man, the head coach doesn't think so and pritchard is not the head coach. I wonder what your fantasy team looks like?

Uh.. it doesn't include Batum, if that's what you mean. He's a very efficient player, but he's not the scorer Outlaw is.

Roy fell into their lap, Aldridge is awesome but is misused, and Oden sucks. So I'll give Pritchard a 1.5/3, or a 50, or an F.

Why is a team that's dangerously thin up front trading a solid 3/4 for a shaky 1/2?
Batum can't score as consitantly as Outlaw, but then again he's only 19 and plays much better defense.  He'll be a much better player than Outlaw in the long-run after he gains some experience.  And I really think that you over-rate Outlaw slightly.

Roy was in Portland's sights all along the draft in that year.  The trade they made for Aldridge set up the trade they made for Roy and the ability to buy the draft pick from Pheonix that resulted in Sergio Rodriguez.  The very next year Pritchard bought another 1st round pick from Pheonix that resulted in Rudy Fernadez.  And I don't think that Aldridge is being missused at all, he's having an All-Star caliber season so far.  So when you look at Rodriguez and Batum getting limited playing time and Oden being a work in progress, Pritchard should really get a 4/6.  And let's face it, even a 50% success rate on picks for a GM is way over average.

But I still think that Portland would be stupid for trading for Conley!!
