The Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets have done everything they possibly could to throw away the NL Wild Card, but on Tuesday night they finally stepped up and have set up what should be a fun final five days.
Ironically, it's going to be the Chicago Cubs who decide which team advances. After having clinched home advantage throughout the NL, the Cubs took their foot off the gas last night and started Sean Marshall, in addition to replacing many regular starters during the game. With Johan Santana on the mound, the Mets couldn't afford a loss in that situation and he delivered.
When the Mets victory was posted on the Miller Park scoreboard, Milwaukee was trailing 5-4 in the eighth. A loss against Pittsburgh, at home, would be devastating. That's when their leader stepped up in the bottom of the 9th.
Prince Fielder crushed a walk-off home run to keep the Brewers within one game of the Mets. You can watch that video here. The Brew Crew has been playing tight for weeks, but I believe this is just the momentum changer to lift Milwaukee over New York by the end of the week.
The only trouble is who the Cubs decide to put on the field. Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden are pitching the next two days against New York and will miss the final series in Milwaukee. Advantage, Brewers.
