Without further ado, here is MrNFL's 2008 All-NFL Awesom-o Team.
Quarterback: Peyton Manning, ColtsThe season started poorly for Manning and the Colts. Between his knee injury and multiple offensive line injuries, the Colts struggled early. But since the Colts have gone on a huge winning streak, and Manning has been playing once again like the best QB in the league for the most part. His numbers are still among the best despite his injury and offensive line woes. He also hasn't padded his stats like Kurt Warner against terrible teams. He played solid in big games against the Ravens, Steelers, and Patriots, and has been efficient as always. Which is why Manning is my QB choice, just edging out Drew Brees.
Halfback: Michael Turner, Falcons
Turner has been the workhorse that has helped turn the Falcons franchise around. I once doubted him, but now I am a beliver. His speed has made him a threat to get many yards, and his power has allowed him to take 332 carries without tire. Turner's success has helped everyone in Atlanta, and the constant run threat has allowed rookie Matt Ryan and Roddy White to be so successful. Without him, the Falcons wouldn't likely be in this playoff chase.
Fullback: Ovie Mughelli, Falcons
For as great as Turner has been, he's had some help. Solid offensive line play by the likes of Justin Blalock has helped, but the blocking power of Mughelli has made a huge impact. Have no doubt, Mughelli is not a threat at all holding the ball. But that's not his job. His job is to be a big time blocker, and he has plowed holes all season for Turner and Jerious Norwood. He's my fullback.
Wide Receiver: Andre Johnson, Texans/Calvin Johnson, LionsJohnson is an easy choice, he's been absolutely dominant all season, but has been little known because he's in Houston. Despite having the Rosencopter as his QB for times, he has more receptions, and by far more yards than anyone else.
Calvin Johnson has been the only positive in Detroit outside of the kicker. Despite being surrounded by nothing but total failure, Johnson is averaging 17.9 a catch, the best amongst the top 50 in receptions, and has ten touchdowns. If this guy had even HALF of a team around him, he'd lead the league. With a good team, he could shatter records.
Tight End: Tony Gonzalez, Chiefs
The veteran continues to get it done, as he leads tight ends and is 7th in the league in receptions. Despite a lackluster team around him as well, he's still done what he's always done; make plays. Plus, he's one of the smartest players in all of football.
Tackles: Ryan Clady, Broncos/David Diehl, Giants
I know it won't happen because he's a lineman, but Ryan Clady is my rookie of the year. The impact he has had on their line is absurd. He has been an absolute BEAST for the Broncos, as they have allowed the 2nd fewest sacks on the team that's thrown the 4th most passes. And despite the fact they've used about 7,342 different running backs this year, Denver is still 5th best in yards per carry. He has instantly made an impact and is an elite tackle already.
As for Diehl, the Giants unit has remained one of the best, and Diehl remains the anchor of that Giants line at tackle, as he protects Eli Manning's blind side, and does a great job of doing it.
Guards: Steve Hutchinson, Vikings/Alan Faneca, JetsThese are the "chalk" picks, but these two remain the best guards in football. Hutchinson continues to provide endless openings for Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor, and is probably pound-for-pound the best lineman in the game today.
As for Faneca, his impact with the Jets has been immediate, as they went from a team unable to run the ball or protect the QB to one of the more successful teams on the ground and a respectable team pass blocking. Faneca is still the biggest aquistion to the New York Jets, not Favre.
Center: Kevin Mawae, Titans
The Titans offensive line has played very well, as they have allowed the fewest sacks in the league and have been very successful on the ground. At 37 years old, Mawae still remains one of the NFL's best centers, and his talent and veteran leadership have helped the Titans been so successful.
There's the offense, and frankly, that's a fine looking offense. Let's look at the defense that would face them:
Defensive Ends: Robert Mathis, Colts/Julius Peppers, Panthers
Both of these guys have a good deal in common. Both are ferocious pass rushers who are the nightmares of quarterbacks, and both force fumbles. Only Calvin Pace has an equal number of forced fumbles plus recovered fumbles as Mathis at 8, and those turnovers have been incredibly timely for the Colts. Peppers has one more sack than Mathis, and also have 5 forced fumbles. Both men are incredibly talented pass rushers, and can play the run fairly well too, and are two ends that no tackle wants to face.
Defensive Tackle: Kevin Williams, Vikings/Albert Haynesworth, Titans
The Vikings run D once again is dominant, and Kevin and Pat Williams are the main reason again. The thing that makes Kevin standout is his pass rush ability, while Pat is simply a run stopper. Kevin is one of the better DT's against the run, and he is a great pass rusher. He's one of those guys that could instantly make an impact for any team.
The Headstomper has probably been the biggest reason for the great success of the Titans defense. This is a guy who forces a double team on EVERY down, and if you refuse to do so, you will regret it. He's a guy that can get to the quarterback and someone who eats running backs for lunch. Plus, do you really want to question a guy that is a headstomper?
Outside Linebacker: James Harrison, Steelers/DeMarcus Ware, CowboysFirst off, a HUGE honorable mention to Joey Porter, who's also had such an impressive season that I was tempted to just say "screw it" and make my team have 3 starting outside linebackers. But he just gets edged out due the superior run stopping of the others. DeMarcus Ware is simply a sack machine. 19, and with two weeks to go, he might beat Michael Strahan's single season record. Plus 4 forced fumbles and 74 tackles make him once again one of the best defensive forces in football.
James Harrison has done what many other Steeler linebackers have done in the past, and that's become a machine. He has a league best 7 forced fumbles to go with 15 sacks. On top of the fact that he's a dominant pass rusher, he's also great against the run, and probably has had a better season than any other defensive player in the league.
Middle Linebacker: Jon Beason, Panthers
He's a tackling machine who is a big time stud on the Panthers defense. He's seemingly everywhere for the Panthers, as no one has more solo tackles than he does. That and he can play the pass well in coverage. Very few players in the NFL are as good at getting to the ball carrier as Beason is.
Cornerbacks: Nnamdi Asomugha, Raiders/Asante Samuel, EaglesThese are your standard easy choices for corner, and they make sense. NO ONE even dares to throw the ball towards Asomugha, and when they do, they regret it. He has to be the best coverage corner in the league, and he just doesn't allow completions. Simple as that.
Samuel has continued to play at the same high level in Philadelphia as he had in New England. Only the Ravens have allowed a lower completion percentage than the Eagles, and Samuel is the main reason for this. Another man who is simply a bonefide stud.
Safety: Troy Polamalu, Steelers/Ed Reed, Ravens
Polamalu has flown all over the field and is huge reason that the Steelers have allowed fewer passing yards than any other team. Polamalu has made circus interceptions all season, leading the league with 7, and he's everywhere making deflections. That added to the fact that he's right there to stop the run makes him an incredible threat.
Ed Reed isn't nearly the run stopper that Polamalu is, but he might be the best pass coverage safety in the league. His incredible speed and instincts allows him to always be where the ball is thrown. He has 3 total touchdowns, and is a big contributor to the fact that teams have had less success getting completions on the Ravens than any other team.
Kicker: Jason Hanson, Lions
How he's managed to stay sane playing for the Lions for 17 seasons is beyond me. He's 21-22, his one miss was blocked. And despite the fact he's in his late 30's, Hanson is EIGHT for EIGHT from 50+. He's been money from every distance, plus he deserves some award for being stuck with the Lions.
Punter: Shane Lechler, Raiders
He has the second best net average, the second best total average, and the third most total punts inside the 20 yard line. Those ahead in one statistic are behind in another. He's the best punter in football in my opinion.
Return Men: Leodis McKelvin, Bills/Roscoe Parrish, Bills
McKelvin has the best kick return average of those who've been going at it all year. Roscoe Parrish has the best punt return average of the guys who've played all year. Both have a touchdown and have made a huge impact for the Bills. Unfortunately, his team has choked the season away.
There you have it. This is the 2008 MrNFL All Awesom-o Team, and I challenge you to find anyone who has played better this season than the guys I've listed. Feel free to comment. (I know the QB will be the only one most people look at, and the one the most will want to debate, so bring it)
