Pro Football on Thanksgiving
Lets see if you guessed right!!!
The game that goes down as the first professional game played on Thanksgiving was played between the Lehigh Mountain Hawks and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. Lehigh won 21-0. You might be saying to yourself; Lehigh is a college team, and this guy has no idea what he is talking about. Let me drop some knowledge.
Up until 1920, when the current National Football League was formed, it was not unusual for college and pro teams to play against each other. So, while Lehigh is a college team, the Pittsburgh Athletic Club played in the Western Pennsylvania Professional Football Circuit until 1898.
The NFL did start playing on Thanksgiving in 1920, with 9 of the 14 teams playing that day. The Canton Bulldogs, Akron Pros, Decatur Staleys(now the Chicago Bears), Chicago Tigers, Detroit Heralds, Dayton Triangles, Columbus Panhandles, Hammond Pros, and the Rochester Jeffersons.
Another trivia question.
Which NFL team has gone the longest without playing on Thanksgiving?
The San Diego Chargers lasted played in 1969
Enjoy your holiday everyone!!
