Puyol returns as Barcelona go top of La Liga after goalless draw with Osasuna
Barcelona captain Carles Puyol was happy to be back on his feet once again, after recovering from a serious knee injury. However, the Spain international was disappointed to be part of a goalless draw with Osasuna on the road.
Barcelona’s run of eight straight victories in the league finally came to an end against a resilient Osasuna side, who kept all of Barcelona’s attacks at bay. Barcelona, who were without Lionel Messi till the 68th minute, made a number of efforts at scoring goals, but were unable to break the Osasuna defense.
Barcelona has dearly felt Messi’s absence. Neymar was given the four-time Ballon d’Or’s role in the attack, but the young Brazilian forward wasn’t able to replicate the Argentinean hitman’s magic.
Apart from the 35-year-old center-half being added to the squad, manager Gerardo Martinez made a long list of other changes as well. Puyol claims it’s been difficult for him during the last couple of months, but he is glad to be back finally.
“These last couple of months have been complicated, but I've been training with the team for days,” Puyol said. “I'm pleased with how I felt on the pitch, but not with the final result.”
For the first time in two years Barcelona went home with a scoreline that showed they had scored no goals. With the Champions League game against AC Milan coming up in the middle of the week Martinez will be eager to change that.
“We knew that this is a difficult stadium to play in, we weren't accurate in front of goal and our final touch wasn't precise,” Puyol said.
In spite of recording a draw, the single point from the game was enough to send Barcelona back on top of the La Liga table since Atletico Madrid’s perfect record was also got smashed. Atletico had to face a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Espanyol on Saturday.
Barcelona now possesses 25 points from nine games. Atletico Madrid has accumulated 24 points and Real Madrid are standing third with 22 points. Fourth placed Villareal have 17 points on the table.
