Rafa back Ancelotti for Real Madrid job as the plot thickens
The new Napoli manager Rafael Benitez has backed Carlo Ancelotti as the Italian boss edges closer to become the boss of Santiago Bernabeu. The Paris Saint-Germain manager is the top candidate to succeed Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid this summer, especially after the club’s president Florentino Perez recognized him as a potential target.
Real Madrid are in desperate need of change, a pragmatic process that can be best delivered by Carlo Ancelotti according Rafael Benitez. The former Liverpool manager believes Carlo Ancelotti’s unique management style would be a welcome relief to the Real Madrid dressing room after Jose Mourinho’s controversial reign.
In an interview to Spanish sports magazine AS, Rafael Benitez hailed the former AC Milan manager, who he faced during the 2005 and 2007 Champions League finals. The Spaniard believes Real Madrid have made the right decision to choose Carlo Ancelotti as the new manager of their club.
“I know him well from Milan because of the finals in Athens and Istanbul and we had a very good relationship when we were both in the Premier League,” Rafael Benitez said. “I think it's the correct choice because he will a conciliator in the dressing room and inside the club. I think the club will appreciate that change.”
Rafael Benitez also talked about the time he snubbed Real Madrid for Liverpool. The former Inter Milan manager claims Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis did a good job convincing him to come to Serie A to join the Italian club.
“When Madrid did call me several years ago, I was already committed to Liverpool; since then, they haven't called me,” said Rafael Benitez talking about the knock on the door from Real Madrid. “You need to ask Florentino and his advisors how their selection process works.
“I have achieved enough and won sufficient trophies over the years for others to get an idea of my capabilities as a coach. I am not going to turn around and tell you that I would like to coach Madrid when I have only just signed for Napoli. That would be a lack of respect to a fantastic club and I cannot do that.
Rafael Benitez revealed that Aurelio de Laurentiis travelled to London to privately discuss with him over the possibility of joining Real Madrid.
“I'm here because the president, Aurelio de Laurentiis, flew out to London to meet me,” Rafael Benitez explained. “He made a great effort and that showed me that he must be serious about bringing me in to be the head of the club's project.
“This is the man who took over the club when it was in the Third Division and look where he has taken them... So we spoke about things, he told me what he wants and I explained a little about my working methods. We are thinking along the same lines. He has put Napoli at my disposal.”
