Rafael Benitez reveals reason behind Fernando Torres’ dip in form
Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has revealed the reason behind the dip in form of the club’s £50m star Fernando Torres. The interim boss of Stamford Bridge claims Chelsea’s over-reliance reliance on Fernando Torres has put too much pressure on the forward.
Fernando Torres, who was signed in by Chelsea from Liverpool £50 million in 2011, has scored only once in his last 14 games. Chelsea has shown a lot of faith by putting Fernando Torres in their starting lineup since he was signed in, but now it appears as if the club and fans are finally starting to lose patience with the Spaniard.
The 28-year-old Spain international has scored only 27 goals in 111 games for Chelsea. This season Fernando Torres has netted 15 times in 43 appearances; which is a better scoring rate in comparison to last season, but proof of abysmal form.
Chelsea, who faced a 2-0 defeat at the hands of second-placed Manchester City, are 19 points away from the Premier League leaders on table. Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are breathing down Chelsea’s neck for the third spot. Tottenham Hotspur will have the opportunity to snatch the third-spot from Chelsea in their game against West Ham United on Monday.
With Fernando Torres struggling to score, Frank Lampard, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard have been scoring crucial goals for Chelsea. Before Demba Ba was brought to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea had only Fernando Torres as striker in their attack force.
However, with Daniel Sturridge sold to Liverpool and Romelu Lukaku loaned out to West Bromwich Albion, a lot of responsibility is on Fernando Torres’ shoulders once again. Rafael Benitez believes that its this over-burdening that’s caused the barren spell for Fernando Torres.
“Fernando has been playing 10 games as the only striker we had,” Rafael Benitez said. “The other teams have three or four strikers. Now we have two, so we have to use both of them. The number of games and the congestion and the time you have to recuperate players, it’s not easy.
“You have to have 11 players as fit as possible with fresh legs, and the right balance tactically. We have to manage.”
Rife rumors suggest Fernando Torres will be sold out for a new striker during the summer transfer window, but the most prudent option would be to keep him at the club and provide him with some support.
