Quite a week for Spain. It's soccer team ends a 44-year drought in major international competitions and one week later it's tennis star, Rafael Nadal, ends Roger Federer's five year run at Wimbledon in an epic battle.
Seven plus hours from start to finish, five sets, several rain stoppages, fittingly wouldn't stop at just seven games in the final set. Nadal had his match point opportunities throughout, and Federer led 7-6 in the final set. Struggling for words, but an incredible back in forth which was given the added drama of darkness coming over centre court, finished at 9-7.
If John McEnroe says it's the greatest match he's ever seen, who himself has been in some of the most memorable, then I'll have to agree. It's without question the best Wimbledon Gentlemen's Final ever.
We'll talk more about this match more tomorrow (and add some video shortly), but I think the question for now is whether Nadal has surpased Federer as the best player in the world. At the very least this should end the silly claims that the Spaniard only plays well on clay.
Unbelievable match. Hopefully those of you who watched will remember this as it likely won't be surpassed when you factor in Federer's dominance at the All England Club.
