Ravens beat Broncos in double overtime upset, Peyton Manning throws 2 interceptions

The Ravens pulled off the upset, and the Broncos are one and done after a 2OT thriller

Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsBefore the game, many people were projecting the Broncos to go to the Super Bowl, and even win it all. I hate to say I told you so, but... well, I did.

The Ravens went into Denver and completely shocked the Broncos and a lot of so-called experts who figured the Broncos would win by double digits.

So where did it go wrong for the Broncos?

Several places, really.

For starters, Peyton Manning went back into Vintage Playoff Manning mode, with two huge interceptions. The first one was returned for a touchdown. The second one was in overtime, and basically closed out the game. It allowed the Ravens to take over at the Denver 45, and they proceeded to gain only 16 yards before Justin Tucker kicked the game-winning field goal.

Another problem was that Broncos head coach John Fox was far too conservative in his play calling.

It's almost like he forgot that Peyton Manning was the one who had gotten them into the playoffs in the first place.

Time after time, the Broncos relied on Ronnie Hillman in third down, instead of their MVP candidate QB.

The defense was also nothing impressive, as the 3rd best defense in the regular season allowed 132 yards to Ray Rice, and 331 yards and 3 TD to Joe Flacco.

Speaking of Flacco, he was equal parts brilliant and awful.

He forced the Ravens to take a crucial time out in regulation to avoid a delay of game penalty, and later got flagged for it in overtime, backing the Ravens up to the 3 yard line.

However, he was incredible on a 3rd down pass to Dennis Pitta from out of his own end zone, and on several deep balls to Torrey Smith.

In the end, the Ravens defense held strong in overtime, shutting down the Broncos when it mattered, and getting the key interception to allow the offense to get into field goal position easily.

The Ravens are heating up at the right time, and the Broncos were exposed for the frauds that they are.

I guess an 11-game regular season winning streak doesn't mean much when it's against a bunch of tomato cans.

After the first Manning interception was returned for a touchdown, the Broncos play calling seemed to go into conservative mode and instead of speeding up the game and trying to tire out the aging Ravens defense, the Broncos played right into their hands.  It also didn't help that Champ Bailey was absolutely abused by Joe Flacco and the Ravens receivers.

well doesn't say much about the abilities of the Ravens does it?  Took them double overtime to beat a fraud. lol

Sure doesn't. That's why they'll get wrecked next week in New England.

In terms of sports teams, that is not the implication. They were projected to win the Super Bowl by many. They came up well short. They fell far short of expectations. That is what people mean when they refer to a sports team as "frauds." It is not an attack on their character, it is merely commentary on their performance not matching up to expectations.

I understand you're upset about the Broncos losing, but my goodness... please lighten up.

It's not anger at all. I have nothing against the Broncos. They're a good team, as evidenced by the fact that they were a hair's breadth from hosting the conference championship game. They just weren't as good as everyone was trying to say they were. I said that from the beginning, and I was proven right. That's not anger, just analysis.

The "fraud" they were?  That is demeaning to the RAVENS to say they beat a fraud.  You article seemed well thought out and articulated and then you say that.  Blew the entire piece with that one statement. Let your anger show and lost all journalistic integrity.

LOL love it, with so many saying how great this team was, even thou they play a very weak AFC West, and wins against the Browns, Bengals and yes Ravens. Granted the Ravens were weak on defense in week 15 and were not great this game. but as Pat said John fox, (who IMO) is a fool and not much of a coach, played to conservative. Funny the Broncos made it as far in the play-offs as the Broncos team did last season.
