I know I've already picked on Joe Maddon and the Rays today, but it simply had to happen again, once I saw their latest harebrained scheme. On June 30, the Rays will have a "Turn Back the Clock" night during their game with the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers will just wear the uniforms they wore back in 1979, since they actually existed back then.
The Rays, having only existed since 1998, are doing what any self-loathing, history-lacking franchise would do.
They're making fake throwbacks, modeled after what they MIGHT have been, if the Rays had any sort of history whatsoever.
As you can see in the picture to the right, they're pretty terrible. So far, the most popular comparison has been the Flint Tropics, the fictional team in Will Ferrell's 2008 film "Semi-Pro."
When your throwback-style uniforms are being compared to a team in a Will Ferrell comedy, you know something is wrong.
But hey... when your whiny, wannabe hipster manager is one of the longest-running jokes in baseball, I suppose anything can happen, even these terrible uniforms.
What's your take on the Rays' "throwback" uniforms?
Are they a nice nod to the '70s, or are they an absolute joke?

That's putrid, but still not as bad as the throwbacks the Steelers will be wearing this year...NOTHING is that bad!

For a one-timer, it's darn good. Points for creativity and use of the colors lacking in the regulars.
