Real Madrid president confirms Jose Mourinho set to leave club
The Bernabeu boss has strongly been linked to Chelsea in the past couple of weeks. By the looks of it Mourinho will be returning to the London outfit this summer. Chelsea officials have failed to comment on this topic, although the players have happily endorsed Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge.
At Real Madrid, Mourinho has managed to pick silverware in each of the three seasons he has been at the club. In his first season Mourinho lifted the Copa del Rey cup, in the second he acquired the League title and at the start of this season Mourinho led real Madrid to the Spanish SuperCopa.
In spite of picking silverware, Real Madrid has under-performed under Mourinho. Their success in the Champions League was limited, Barcelona managed to best them and they lost the Copa del Rey final to derby rivals Atletico Madrid.
Florentino Perez called a press conference to end all the speculation regarding Jose Mourinho and lay out the club’s plans for the future. Perez insisted Mourinho hadn’t been sacked and that both parties had decided to part their ways peacefully.
“After conversations with our coach Jose Mourinho, we have decided to end our relationship at the end of this season,” Perez said. “Both the club and the coach think this is the right moment to end the relationship. In the name of all the board I want to thank Mourinho for his work over these three years, he has helped us make an important sporting improvement. We wish him success in the next stage of his career.”
Rife rumors suggest Paris Saint-Germain manager Carlo Ancelotti is the top-rated candidate to replace Mourinho at Real Madrid. Paris Saint-Germain are unwilling to part from the Italian boss, although they appear to be listening to Real Madrid’s offer for compensation very keenly.
“I have maximum respect for PSG, its president, and all other clubs,” Perez said on the issue. “That is how we work. There was a call made about the possibility of Carlo Ancelotti coming here, and they told us he was under contract. The new coach is not something which will be resolved tomorrow, we have time to think about options. There are many of these.”
