Red Auerbach Would Never Stand For Flopping
Surprisingly, Manu Is Not To Blame for the NBA's Disease
READ MORE:
NBA

The current landscape of the NBA definitely has its advantages over old school hoops. It's impossible not to enjoy the above the rim game and the jaw dropping athleticism of guys like Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul.

However, the old Association still rules because of guys like Red Auerbach.

Fine work by Bullets Fever to dig up this classic NBA footage of Red discussing the early days of a trend he would not stand for.

The Art of Flop.

(Check out the sweet fros on Paul Silas, Wes Unseld and yes, Clem Haskins. Good to see you again, Clem.)

Red is absolutely beside himself that the "new" breed of coaches are actually teaching this garbage. With the help of an official, Auerbach walks through some scenarios of flopping and how the referees should address the acting - ignore it.

Clearly, this video is not used in NBA official training.

It's amazing that Auerbach was so committed to cutting this garbage off at its head way back in the 70's, yet it has progressed this far.

Finally this week the league has decided to fine floppers. In combination with that news and Spurs losing last night, somewhere Red is lighting up his favorite victory cigar.

He would however think about it if it was to prevent Phil Jackson from passing him for most Titles won.

I notice the curious absence of one Celtic legend named Danny Ainge.  I wonder why...?

Hah.  Danny Ainge wishes he was a legend.  He was probably 3 seeing-eye singles away from zero NBA titles.  Ainge was definitely a "right place, right time" kind of guy.

Well, anyone who played on the same team with Bird and McHale got some opportunities to shine.  Hell, even Scott Wedman and Jerry Sichting had a few good games playing with those guys!  Ainge was probably a little better than you are giving him credit for, but he was definitely a flopper who pleaded with the officials for a foul on every play.  That Bird, McHale, Parrish, Johnson and Ainge line-up are still the best starting five players I have seen on one team at one time.

I still don't understand how Dennis Johnson is not in the Hall of Fame.

Me either.  Maybe they are prejuidiced against black guys with freckles? DJ was a hell of a player and deserves a spot in the HOF.  Really sad the way he died last year:  Dying after coaching a NBDL or WNBA practice is not the way for a player like that to depart.
