We've seen this before. Twice.
2004: Red Sox fall in a 0-3 hole to the Yankees. Sox come back to win the ALCS in 7 games, beating the best closer in baseball in the process, and then move on to the World Series, where they swept the Cardinals.
2007: Red Sox fall behind the Indians 3 games to 1. Sox reel off 3 straight wins, and sweep the Rockies in the World Series.2008: Red Sox win Game 1, and lose the next 3, to fall behind 3-1.
Watch out, Phillies.
Can the Red Sox really do it again? Yes, they absolutely can. But as hard as it was to pull it off in 2004 and 2007, this year will be even tougher. Josh Beckett isn't 100%, Mike Lowell isn't playing, David Ortiz isn't hitting, Jacoby Ellsbury hasn't hit at all, and aside from Daisuke Matsuzaka, the Rays haven't shown any weaknesses thus far.
Fortunately, Daisuke is pitching on Thursday in Game 5. The problem is, they need more than that. The Red Sox need a Dave Roberts moment. They need someone like Jacoby Ellsbury to get on base, and get in the Rays' heads. Will that even do the trick? Maybe, maybe not. Ellsbury hasn't gotten on base at all so far in this series, except for a 9th inning Game 4 walk, when the game was already out of hand.A moment like that might not even have the same effect on the Rays. If any team is as resilient as the Red Sox, it is this Tampa Bay team. They are young, ecstatic to be in the playoffs, and extremely opportunistic.
Call me crazy, but as a Red Sox fan, I'm as optimistic as ever. Just like 2004 and 2007, the Red Sox will dig their way out of the hole and move on.
