Red Sox May Trade Jonathan Papelbon
The Jonathan Papelbon Trade Rumors Are Understandably Heating Up Again
I already discussed this idea about a month and a half ago. Now, thanks to some comments made by Steve Phillips on WEEI and of course Papelbon's ALDS meltdown, the rumors are flying around stronger than ever.

Despite his incredibly disappointing performance in Game 3, Papelbon still has a postseason ERA of 1.00, a regular season ERA of 1.84, and averages 38 saves per season. He's still a very marketable commodity, and his ultra-competitive attitude tends to hint that he'll rebound from this setback and return better than ever.

As I said in the previous post, trading Papelbon might actually be a good move, provided they get the right player(s) in return. The Red Sox desperately need to upgrade at catcher and shortstop, and it looks like they'll need to find a replacement for Jason Bay, since he'll be a free agent, and appear to be leaning towards the West coast.

Now, however, Billy Wagner isn't the primary fall-back plan... which might be a blessing in disguise. Wagner is reportedly considering retirement, but the Red Sox will receive draft pick compensation if he signs elsewhere, which the Sox would prefer.

It's hard to gauge exactly who they could get in a multi-player deal, but here are some guys for whom I would trade Papelbon, straight up, in order of preference. I tried to be slightly realistic, but of course there's no guarantee that these team would part with them:

1. Elvis Andrus, SS, Texas Rangers - He still could use a little improvement at the plate, but he's an incredible defensive shortstop.
2. Troy Tulowitzki, SS, Colorado Rockies - He's by far the best power hitting shortstop in baseball, and would fit very nicely in the Red Sox lineup.
3. Taylor Teagarden, C, Rangers - He's a very good young catcher, and the Rangers have Jarrod Saltalamacchia as a Plan B.
4. Geovany Soto, C, Chicago Cubs - The 2008 NL Rookie of the Year had a rough season in '09, but he's still young, and a move to the Red Sox lineup could do him some good.
5. Jason Bartlett, SS, Tampa Bay Rays - He was a legit MVP candidate, and I honestly don't think the Rays would pull the trigger on this, but they could use a new closer.
6. Yunel Escobar, SS, Atlanta Braves - Escobar is another one of the better up and coming shortstops. Solid at the plate and in the field, he'd fill their SS need nicely.
7. Yadier Molina, C, St Louis Cardinals - Molina might be the best defensive catcher in the league. He's not exactly a slugger, but he's no slouch at the plate, either. His defensive skills alone would make it worth it for the Sox.

What do you think? Which one of these teams might pull the trigger on these deals? And should the Red Sox trade Papelbon? Daniel Bard is widely assumed to be their closer of the future, and he pitched very well in the postseason, and has great stuff. Is it time to move on? For the right price, it just might be.

We'll take him in the NL. In the NL his ERA would probably be negative.

Trading Soto to the Bosox for Papelbon makes alot of sense. VMart does not throw out runners well and Veritek is on the tail end of his career. Ineresting write-up Pat!

I understand Theo Epstein will listen for anyone, but is trading Papelbon really the answer? Pat, you yourself has said that closer is the most over-rated position in baseball. Seems to me that no GM would take Papelbon for the kind of quality players you have listed. Maybe you've got that one GM that thinks he's a closer away from contending (Seattle maybe), but I would think Papelbon stays put. Great read, though.

I think Seattle was plenty happy with Aardsma closing last year. Papelbon wouldn't be all that much more of an upgrade there.

If I had any of those players, I would not trade them for a closer. However, stranger things have happened. The Rangers might be willing to trade one of their young catchers for relatively cheap, for the mere fact that they have two of them. Soto has had a few issues in Chicago, and their closer situation is atrocious. Maybe they think they're a closer away from the playoffs, and don't think they can get anyone better than that for Soto. For the most part, though, I agree. I don't think most of these teams would think about the offer for very long. I'm sure your Rays, for example, would laugh at the idea of trading Bartlett for Papelbon.

In response to zhum24, it's not just one blown save. It's the blown save, his financial situation, the fact that his replacement is already on the roster and looked better than him in the playoffs, and just the fact that there are some closers who never are truly the same after something like this. The Red Sox have VERY glaring needs right now. If they could fill them by trading their easily replaced closer, then there's no reason not to do the deal.

I can't argue with your logic and I agree that out of 29 other teams there might/must be one that would let go of an established high graded prospect at SS/C for Papelbon.
Are you surprised that Bay didn't get done? Could Carl Crawford be a reason why Bay didn't get done?

Well, he did blow up the Red Sox season, at least, the best best thing to do is get him out of your way!!!!

I hope so... but probably not. I think that the Red Sox are going to go after Matt Holliday first and foremost. But that's obvious, since he's really the only free agent worth looking at.

The real problem with Bay is that he's really only worth about $14M per year. But that's how much JD Drew is making, and Bay is better than Drew... but JD is overpaid. So since they have Drew out in RF making $14M/yr, they really can't justify offering Bay the same thing. It makes the whole situation very awkward.

What happened to winning as a team and losing as a team? And wasnt it last year that they were bragging about his pitching in the playoff series? And another thing I never liked the fact that the Pirates traded Jay Bay to the Sox.. The Sox are a great team but everyone deserves a chance to win the world series, if they are good enough to win in the playoffs......................................

with that kind of reasoning, i guess the yankees should have traded mariano rivera a long time ago...

Jonathan Papelbon has been very good over the course of his career... but he's not Mariano Rivera.

Colonel, you're right.  Papelbon is no Mariano Rivera.  His numbers are better than Mo's.  Even a greater spread between their numbers if you look at fist five years of career rather than entire career.

career     era     era+    saves    whip     h/9    hr/9    bb/9    so/9     so/bb
Mariano 2.25     202    39/yr       1.013  7.0     0.5      2.1       8.3       3.9
post season era 0.76 whip 0.773

career         era    era+   saves   whip    h/9    hr/9    bb/9    so/9    so/bb
Pap             1.84  254      38/yr     0.98    6.5     0.6      2.3    10.4     4.49
post season era 1.00 whip 0.815  (all of those earned runs were in ALDS game 3 this year)

Let's see if Papelbon is still the most dominant closer ten years from now...then we'll talk
