I used to hate Todd Collins during his Michigan days. He ended a couple seasons for the Spartans, but when he ended the Bears season tonight it was more relief than anything.
In part, you have to feel good for a team that put their friend, teammate to rest just three days ago. The ability to fight for every inch in a football game so soon afterwards is impressive. Furthermore, after watching the Skins lose a close game last week they deserved to win, I couldn't stomach watching these guys lose another game to a team that would appear 100% committed to losing football.
The hero came from the most unlikely spot -- Todd Collins. I thought I was a football junkie, but I didn't know he was the Redskins backup until three Bears rolled up on Jason Campbell's leg in the 2nd quarter. Bryant Gumbel's assistant (not going to give him credit) joked that this was the best game Todd had played this decade. Since 1998, Collins had completed 18 passes in reserve duty, his best game resulted in a 9-for-12 performance for the Chiefs in 2003. Tonight he went 15-for-20, 224 yards and 2 touchdowns. Joe Gibbs couldn't speak highly enough about his QB during post-game interviews.
It's not worth me complaining about what's wrong with the Bears. Tonight it's an applause for the Redskins who deserve four solid days of peace and quiet after a big win that keeps their season alive. For us Chicago fans, it's time to start predicting how Jerry Angelo will screw up the first pick. Any guesses?
