Report: Rockets May Trade Omer Asik Between December 15th - 19th
Houston Rockets back-up center, Omer Asik, has not been silent regarding his desire to be traded from the Rockets. From the moment that the Rockets signed Dwight Howard this past summer, Asik has voiced his displeasure with his new role. Last year, Asik proved to the NBA world that he was more than just a back-up center when he averaged 10ppg and 11rpg in his first full year as a starting center.
However, with the acquisition of Howard and the twin tower combo a failure, Asik has accumulated several DNP’s this year.
New reports now suggest that Asik may be traded between December 15th and 19th.
Marc Stein of ESPN says, “The significance of such a specific window is two-fold. Dec. 15 is the first day players who signed new contracts in the offseason can be plugged into trades, and Dec. 19 is the last day any player acquired by Houston in an Asik deal can be repackaged with other players before the league's Feb. 20 trade deadline.”
The 27-year-old is clearly more than just a back-up center and with no room for playing time on the Rockets, Asik wants to showcase what he can do. The only difficulty with trading Asik right now is that Houston wants two first round draft picks and Asik’s contract goes up to $15 million for next year. Still, you have to believe that some small ball team in the NBA can use the services of this talented big man.
