Rich Rodriguez Negotiating with Michigan; Taking West Virginia's Basketball Coach Wasn't Enough
Still in the rumormongering stage, but I'm going to predict this gets done over the weekend: Rich Rodriguez to Michigan.

Yes, the same Rodriguez who recently signed a contract with his alma mater until 2013 which came with a $4 million dollar buyout.

Should this go through I'll be interested to see whether he'll keep with his spread offense. Ryan Mallet doesn't exactly strike me as the type of guy to lead the charge.

This would also mark the second time in one year that Michigan has taken a Mountaineer head coach. Has that ever happened before? One institution taking another's head football and basketball coach in the same calendar year.

Undoubtedly a good coach and a good hire. Your thoughts?

Undoubtedly a good coach, yes, but I don't know if he's a good hire for Michigan assuming he brings the same offense.  Once again, I think Michigan might be overthinking this.  If he does leave it'd be awfully unfortunate for West Virginia, although he would be leaving behind Pat White, Noel Devine, and most likely Steve Slaton for whatever coach gets to take over next.  West Virginia could easily win the national title next year.

If you can't beat one Mountaineers team, take the coach from the other.

Why wouldn't he be a good hire "based on the offense"??

Is he bringing the Wing-T offense, circa 1940??

IMO...it's a good hire football-wise. He brings a fresh perspective & he's a guy that actually built a program, which I'm all for. Lloyd Carr tore us down to the bowels of mediocrity. Rodriguez stands a good chance of bringing our football team into the 21st century. And just a footnote: I'm sensing that Beilein had a hand in this...

I think he means that it would take a lot of adjustment for Michigan and him to implement his spread offense. Michigan, to my knowledge, doesn't have the players currently to run the spread. But given a couple years of recruiting, he could put in that spread system and do some damage in the Big 10.

True... It would be an adjustment...

IMO though---the toughest & most crucial place the adjustment would be felt right away is ONLY at the QB position, and U of M has the resources to turn over quickly. We're still in the heart of recruiting season. A guy like Rich Rodriguez could lure at least one 3 or 4 star recruit in here, if not a 5. He all but signed one at WVU. It's not too much to say that if he gets the job here, his recruit would at least think about following him here...

No doubt but they already have Mallet. Do you think Mallet is the future or just another Chad Henne?

These college coaches really are shameless. Rodriguez used Alabama to milk more money from WV, and now a year later he is playing footsie with Michigan? I thought Gary Barnett was bad when he was at Northwestern...now I'm learning he was simply typical.

They would be a contender, but "easily win the national title"? that is a bit much, no?

Probably yes.  I guess I was trying to say more along the lines that it wouldn't surprise me at all if they won a title.

As a Michigan fan what do you think of potentially hiring Rich Rodriguez?

He's a great coach, but I have mixed feelings. I don't want the spread offense as he runs it at WVa. If adapts it to what he ran when he was at Tulane, more passing and not focused on a Pat White type QB, I will like it. I like that Michigan goes after NFL type qbs.  I don't like his 3-2-6 defense. I am worried about off the field issues, I mean Rodrigues did send Pac-man Jones and Chris Henry out into the world.

All that being said, it would be interesting to see what he can do with the talent Michigan brings in.
