Rick Ankiel: Reports of HGH Use Surface
by CriticalFanatic

When I hear news like this I always hesitate. Mostly because I don't want to believe it's true.

I despise the Cardinals, but it's really disheartening to learn of HGH reports surfacing about Rick Ankiel's past/present.

The New York Daily News is reporting that Rick Ankiel received a 12-month supply of HGH in 2004.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel, baseball's feel-good story of the season, received a 12-month supply of human growth hormone in 2004 from a Florida pharmacy that was part of a national illegal prescription drug-distribution operation, the Daily News has learned.
We know just about every player under the sun has taken some substance that ultimately should be deemed illegal and tested. It's not just Barry Bonds, we all know this.

If baseball doesn't lock up it's testing of HGH soon, I have a feeling they'll start losing fans again starting with me. It's hard to cheer on a good individual story in sports anymore without questioning the authenticity of the achievement.

Reading the article, it doesn't sound like there is much doubt there, at least in that HGH was shipped to him. Of course, there's no proof that he used, but it doesn't look good to have something like that mailed to you.

If you think about it, he does fit the category of guys likely to use - wanting to recover from injuries, trying to make it to/back to the Majors, nothing really to lose. Very disappointing.

He Had no idea it was HGH.

His trainer told him it was an exfoliating face creme.

I love the Cardinals and have been a huge Ankiel fan since his comeback this year; and hope to God I see no excuse like that...

Honestly, I just hope that this kind of thing can be like the Gary Mathews thing we had earlier this season, and kind of blows off -- but now something like this releases; this image is always going to be stuck in the back of my mind; and it sucks.

We get a good story like this, one that ALL baseball fans enjoyed and rooted for, and assume nothing bad can come from it; but you always have to question -- Are we just being blinded by the fact that this game isn't clean, and still won't be for a very long time?

Does it really even matter anymore?  Just about everyone is probably using something or other, who cares anymore.  Just enjoy the game.

A baseball player accused of taking HGH, what a huge shock. <Sarcasm

I got news for everyone. They're ALL taking HGH.

Why is this big news? Isn't there a Pro Bowl caliber NFL playing currently suspended for HGH use? We all know that baseball has problems, but why are they still getting more press than every other sport (except ones where you ride a bike through France)?

If you want HGH cleaned out of baseball then focus on the players union. There are the ones who won't allow blood testing which is required to test for HGH (among other things).

I agree with Kap, who friggin' cares what the guy took 3 years ago!! If it wasn't illegal than you can't pass judgement on somebody for doing it.

I don't get what the big deal is about performance enhancing drugs anyways. It's science. People develop things to help people lose weight, get longer stronger stiffies(which by the way if you get one that lasts more than 4 hours....LOL), or grow hair. Why not be able to develop things to increase strength, stamina, or your health. If it's detrimental to someone's health than absolutely it shouldn't be allowed. People use science/technology to improve at sports all the time. Whether it's a chemical or not should be irrelevant IMO.

It is amazing that no one seems to care at all about an NFL player doing it (see Merriman) but if a MLB guy does it, everyone goes batsh*t crazy.  Insane.

You know what? Things like this are really sad, because it is disheartening to hear that someone like this kid might be juicing, but I've just developed a much tougher skin after 2001, that nothing seems to surprise me anymore. This whole steroid revolution--which Peter Gammoms says it's ending and it's really not, if you ask me--has already changed the game soooo much, that I just feel like it's normal already, and that pisses me off, a lot!
