Rio de Janeiro Has Been Awarded The 2016 Olympic Games
Your 2016 Olympics Will Be Held In Rio de Janeiro. Start Making Plans Now, It Should Be Great.
For the first time ever, the Olympics will be held in South America, as the International Olympic Committee announced today that the 2016 Summer Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 2014 World Cup will also be held in Rio. Madrid was the other finalist, while Tokyo and Chicago were eliminated earlier today in preliminary votes.

Congrats to the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the country of Brazil, who will undoubtedly host some of the best Olympic parties ever.

How many sexy Brazilians were given to each member of the IOC for this? Gotta be at least 10.

DAMN! I was so excited for my adopted country. Well, at least they got the 2010 World Cup.

Well, on the bright side, this helps Tulsa's...ummmm...chances (if you want to be optimistic) for the 2020 Olympics!

Sadly, I'm not kidding

I was not thrilled with certain of the actions of the Brazilian Olympic Committee and others supporting the bid, but Rio is a worthy winner, and, if it couldn't be Chicago, they were the right choice.

Vote totals are out (see Wikipedia, for one).  Huge victory for Rio in the final round.

South Africa's almost certainly going to bid for 2020 (whether it's Cape Town, which fared surprisingly well in the bidding for the 2004 Games, or Durban, where the IOC General Assembly will meet in 2011, remains to be seen), and they've a real shot, IMHO (many seem to regard Rome as the clear front-runner, but I don't see it; I'm inclined to think that the Games will again go to a previously unrepresented area [viable candidates, then, are Doha, Delhi, and the South African representative]).

Brazil Had The Olympics in the pocket with all of those stadiums that are going to go to waste after the 2014 Fifa World Cup. Brazil is going to make a big name out of itself.

I would have to agree with this, I'm kind of glad to see I'm not the only person who feels this way.

Or, like Beijing, let them be completely economically crippled by spending billions on stadiums that will never be used again after the games are over.

They're already building new stadiums for 2014 World Cup which I assure you is a much bigger deal in Brazil than the Olympics.  At least this way the 2016 Summer Games will spread the cost of that multi-billion dollar investment over two events.

China's approach to the Beijing Olympic Games weren't just as a massive sports event. They targeted the entire games to be a political statement, an advert for Chinese advancement, and a catalyst for national modernization.  As a result the Chinese government gave a ‘whatever it takes’ ‘blank cheque’ policy to the games.

Nowadays, the Olympic Games aren't just about gamesmanship, they are a piece of propaganda, a statement of intention. Wait and see - Rio will be a marker for future generations and the viewing millions to see what the country has to offer.

No freakin way. As someone who lives in Tulsa, we didn't have an arena until a year ago. Tulsa ise also trying to and will, bring a WNBA team to town. I am sorry but if you are trying to bring a WNBA team to your city, you shouldn't have Olympics dreams.

Yeah, getting both events is a huge thing. I'm glad to see it happen. The article above mentions that the world cup will be in Rio, which the world cup final will be. But there will be world cup games played all over Brazil in 2014, not just in Rio.

2016 Summer Olympics will undoubtedly be the biggest party ever... oh yeah, they'll have some sports going on too.
