Roberto Alomar's ex-girlfriend Ilya Dall made some rather bold statements in a lawsuit that she filed. Her claims included that Alomar had insisted on having unprotected sex with her, despite knowing that he was HIV-positive.In a statement posted today on his website, Alomar denied the claims.
"This is a very private, personal matter and I greatly appreciate all the support I have received in the past few days from my family, friends and colleagues in baseball. I am in very good health and I ask that you respect my privacy during this time.
As for the lawsuit, it is filled with lies and I am deeply saddened that someone I cared for would make such terrible accusations and try to hurt me in this way."
His current girlfriend, Puerto Rican model Maripily Rivera (pictured), has also denied the claims, calling them "a vile, vile lie". She also claims that Alomar has "never gotten sick on her", and that they train together. At first glance, she looks more "trustworthy" than Dall, if you know what I mean.
According to Rivera's statements to a Puerto Rican TV station, Dall threatened to destroy Alomar after their breakup in October. The Daily News says that Alomar and Rivera have been dating for 6 months. If Alomar and Dall broke up in October (4 months ago), and he has been dating Rivera for 6 months, then it's safe to say that the two women probably share some contempt for each other, and aren't exactly friends. Call it a hunch. Ironically, the story also says that Dall got divorced in 2007, and that her relationship with Alomar lasted 6 years. Clearly there's some overlap there as well.
Alomar has expressed a desire to keep his health status private. His father and girlfriend, however, have spoken out and said that to the best of their knowledge, he is healthy and exercises regular. Rivera even went so far as to mention his "beautiful, well-defined arms". That seems rather inconsistent with Dall's claims that he was "suffering from a mass in his chest, a blood disorder, purple skin and a foaming mouth".
It looks suspiciously like this might just be another classic case of a gold digger trying to squeeze some extra money out of a professional athlete, despite the fact that Alomar paid for her $5M house. The whole story will likely come out soon, and we'll probably find out how much truth is in her claims.
Either way, this is still the guy who spit in the face of umpire John Hirschbeck while arguing balls and strikes. Would it totally shock me if he knowingly gave someone HIV? Maybe, maybe not. But for now, it looks like that might not be the case.
