Roberto Mancini admits he could be shown the door at the end of the season. The Manchester City manager has confessed he is in danger of losing his job because of a trophy-less campaign. The reigning champions failed to defend their Premier League title as Manchester United swooped in to take it this Monday.
On the other hand, Manchester City have been unable to record stable form under their Italian boss. Roberto Mancini and Co. lost 3-1 to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, a defeat that set Manchester United for their 20th Premier League title.
Manchester City’s failing were evident in the Champions League as well. The English powerhouse were forced to make an embarrassing exit from the group stages of the coveted tournament for the second successive year this term.
Presently, the FA Cup is Roberto Mancini’s last ditch effort at saving his job. Manchester City is scheduled to play against the relegation-destined Wigan Athletic in FA Cup final, therefore the Eastlands might as well start celebrating their FA Cup victory already.
Nonetheless, Roberto Mancini has acknowledged his short-fallings this season. In a recent interview to The Guardian, Roberto Mancini admitted Manchester City weren’t able to perform to the best of their abilities this season.
“I'm not happy because I like to win the championship,” Roberto Mancini said. “This was our target. I'm not happy with the season because I want always the maximum. But we have another chance to win the FA Cup and I think the FA Cup is important. And we can be in second position. If that is not good enough, then every manager should be sacked.”
As Manchester United celebrate their 20th Premier League title, Roberto Mancini insists there was barely a difference in quality between the two Manchester clubs. According to the Italian boss Manchester City’s lack of focus and desire were the reason behind his side’s futile season.
“We don't have a gap [to United],” Roberto Mancini said. “The last two or three years … every time we have played United, we have played better, also when we have lost the game. We lost in the last minute [earlier in the season]. Last year we beat them easily. The reason there is a gap like today [in the league] … probably there is more attitude, they wanted.
“They started the season and they wanted to win after last year. There are many reasons why we lose but I repeat, they deserve to win it.”
