Roberto Mancini has had an awful night. The Italian’s side suffered defeat to a mediocre team in the Europa League but that’s just half of the story. Mancini’s key defender and skipper Vincent Kompany is injured got sidelined after an injury. Mancini hopes Kompany will return for action in a fortnight against Sporting, but truth be told he doesn’t about the extent of the injury yet.
In the midst of many calamities it was defender Gael Clichy and goalkeeper Joe Hart, who stepped up the quality of game play for City. They rightly received praise for that from Mancini in the post match interview where Mancini also announced that the Kompany would return in two weeks to play against Sporting.
At this moment Mancini is mainly focused on interpreting the reasons for Eastlands defeat at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. Talking about Kompany’s injury Mancini said:
“We have to wait one or two days to know the exact extent of his injury, but it is a problem with his calf. I hope to have Kompany back in 10 days or two weeks, but we have other solutions.”
Mancini was more concerned for Kompay than the defeat. Mancini explained that he was confident about winning the second leg of the game with a massive lead at the Etihad Stadium, therefore it was important to get his top defender back on the field rather than mourn over a loss.
Mancini further stated that it was luck that had handed Sporting a victory in the night. The 47-year-old gaffer admitted Manchester City’s dismissive game play but refused to give credit to Sporting for their victory. Mancini said:
“We have bigger chances to go through. It will be a different game in Manchester. When we have chances to score, we will score.
“I don’t think Sporting had a lot chances to score. We played like this because Sporting played with all their men behind the ball for all 90 minutes; they wanted to hit us on the counter. We played slow sometimes because we found 10 players behind the ball. We had more chances to score than Sporting.
“We did not underestimate them. Every game is difficult and different, we tried to play good football, sometimes we can, sometimes we can’t. We did not underestimate them. Football is strange. We have another game and we have more chances to win the next game.”
