Robin van Persie downs Rooney, Silva and Aguero to win PFA Player of the Year
The Flying Dutchman of London, Robin van Persie has been awarded the PFA Player of the Year after an outstanding season for Arsenal. The Netherlands international has not only topped the goal-scoring charts in the league this season but broke a couple of records too.
The Gunner has been in immaculate form for Arsenal for the past 12 months which is why he deserved the PFA Award. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney probably came in second to Persie, however the England international had already backed the Dutchman for the award.
Persie became a one man army for Arsenal in the middle of the season to lead them back into the top four of Premier League. It was Persie’s lustrous form that guided the Gunners to another Champions League qualification after manager Arsene Wenger labelled the task a miracle.
Other strong contenders for the PFA award were Manchester City’s David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Joe Hart. Tottenham Hotspur’s Scott Parker was also strong candidate for the award.
The Arsenal captain received praise for stunning performances this year from the PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor.
“He has been amazing, when you think of Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Marco van Basten he is in that mould of absolutely top-class strikers that Holland manages to produce,” Taylor said.
This season Persie became the 17th player in Arsenal’s history to score 100 goals for the Northern London outfit.
Persie also beat Thierry Henry’s record for the most goals scored in a calendar year. Persie could also have broken Alan Shearer’s Premier League record for the most goals scored in a year but 28-year-old striker fell short of one goal.
Wenger is looking for Persie’s possible replacements in the football market but his attempts to recreate a left-footed football prodigy will result in futility. Persie could be on his way out of London this summer if Wenger fails to show ambition to win silverware next season.
Rumor has it Wenger is eyeing big signings next season. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if Persie will be practicing with a new striking partner this summer.
