Rumor alert: The Yankees might have a serious PED problem
Still, if there's any truth behind this rumor at all, then it could mean some serious trouble for the New York Yankees.
According to Joe Bisceglie of a site called Dog and Pony Show, his sources have told him that four MLB players will be suspended in 2013 for failing drug tests.
The four players: 2011 NL MVP Ryan Braun, and Yankees stars Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, and Alex Rodriguez.
Normally, as Bisceglie himself freely admitted, there would be no reason to even bat an eye at something that he tweeted or wrote about sports. Normally, I wouldn't even read his blog or see his tweets, never mind pass it along to the rest of you.
But last year, Bisceglie tweeted something eerily similar. And he was 100% right. On July 18, he tweeted that Melky Cabrera would be suspended soon for violating the MLB PED policy. In August, Cabrera was suspended for violating MLB's PED policy.
This year, he's saying that the aforementioned four players will be suspended sometime this season.
It actually makes some sense, if you look at them logically.
Braun came within a hair's breadth of serving a 50-game suspension in 2012, but escaped due to a technicality. But even the most ardent Braun apologists know deep down inside that he was doping. Would it be a surprise if he got caught again? Absolutely not.
Rodriguez is... well, let's face it: Alex Rodriguez is the poster boy for PED use among all current MLB players. He has already admitted to doing it in the past, and seems to be at the center of every single PED rumor that comes down the pipe. This would be the least surprising potential news about PEDs in baseball.
Cano is a guy who has been linked to PED use in the past, albeit mere rumors published in places like The Sporting News. He is good friends and a former teammate of Cabrera, though, and it's not unreasonable to question his recent power surge.
Granderson is the one guy who hasn't been questioned or suspected, as far as I know, but would it really shock anyone if he were to participate in something that his teammates were doing, particularly if he has seen one or more of them get away with it for years?
If this story is true, then it could be huge news for the Yankees, but mostly because of Cano.
Rodriguez was already going to miss almost 100 games due to injury, and if this happens, this could be the second time he has gotten suspended during time he would have missed due to injury anyway. Granderson is also hurt, with a broken arm that could keep him out for around a month of the regular season anyway, so he'll really only be missing another few weeks on top of that. The biggest news would be Cano missing serious time, since he's not only healthy, but he's also their best player right now.
As far as Braun goes... well, this would really just be poetic justice for the first time he got popped.
We'll see how much of this actually goes down, or if it's just a baseless rumor.
