Rocco Mediate Leads British Open; Phil Mickelson 9-Over [Open Championship 1st Round Results]

So Much For Phil Mickelson Filling Tiger's Void

Everyone favorite runner-up is leading the British Open at Royal Birkdale after Round 1. No, we're not talking about Phil Mickelson who was the victim of poor early weather and even worse accuracy that has him ten shots off the lead at 9-under. That's right, your Open Championship co-leader is Rocco Mediate at 1-under.

Golf is desperate for some interesting storylines and big names to top the leaderboard heading into the critical weekend TV ratings. Lefty was one of those primed to pick up the slack. At least there's always John Daly. Wait, he's 10-over. What about Boo Weekley? Yikes, 10-over as well and officially has his "I'd rather be fishing" bumper sticker up.

Rocco can't pull huge ratings by himself. He'll need some help.

How about Greg Norman? That's right, the Shark is in contention. Fresh off his marriage to Chris Evert, Norman is sitting at even-par and a shot off the lead. By the way, he's officially earned Dick Clark status -- doesn't look any different that he did 20 years ago.

Others who haven't shot themselves out of contention on day 1 that average golf fans could embrace over the weekend: Adam Scott (even), Jim Furyk (+1), Anthony Kim (+2), Sergio Garcia (+2), Jean Van de Velde (+3), and Zach Johnson (+3).

It should be noted that if the skies clear up late Friday afternoon when Phil tees off, he could play himself back into the pack although I wouldn't count on it.

If people were watching the coverage in the US they wouldn't have even known Rocco Mediate was even playing.  They showed Cabrerra who was playing with Rocco all day who was 5 or 6 over without a sign of Rocco until the 17th green chip in and his birdie putt on 18 which gave him the lead.  Even after that there was no comment from the commentators that Rocco was in the lead. They just blew it off just like Johhny Miller's @ the US Open comments that Rocco could be the guy cleaning Tiger's swimming pool and "Guys with the name 'Rocco' don't get  on the trophy, do they?" They showed and commented on Cabrerra all day through the round and I didn't know Rocco was even playing with him until they had to show his chip in.  Rocco, the runner up in the US OPEN was covered for 30 seconds of play during 8 hours of coverage. They talked with all the other players how great a round of 74, 75, 71 was but where were their comments during and after Rocco's round? They finally had to interview him.

This does give you the picture of class warfare in golf.

They only show Boo Weekly and John Daly to make fun of them.

People should remind themselves of Fuzzy Zoeller's remarks after Tiger won his first Masters. " He'll probably have fried chicken for the Master's dinner!"

By the way. I'm not a Rocco fan but just someone that has their eyes open to the unequality of life.

Well, since I picked Phil in the poll originally(whoops!!) I'll have NO problem rooting Rocco on...it would be an incredible story if he could pull this off, or just be in the hunt to the end!!  Norman would make a storyline, too; could Chrissie counter all the bad luck he's had in prior majors?
