Rodgers hails “sensational” Suarez after 3-0 romp of Saints
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers reserved special praise for Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan striker scored a goal and provided an assist in the Reds 3-0 over Southampton. The guests put on a good show against the Saints’ resilient defense with Suarez being the man of the match.
Rodgers, who had been defending Suarez over his dip in form, lavishly praised the 27-year-old forward for his superb form and contribution to Liverpool’s success. Suarez ended his five-match goalless drought by drawing first blood against Southampton in his 100th Premier League appearance for Liverpool.
The Uruguay international has played a central role in Liverpool’s run at the Premier League title. Liverpool is currently placed second on the Premier League table, drawn on points with Arsenal, but a better goal difference keeping them afloat.
There is still a difference of four points between Liverpool and the Premier League leaders Chelsea. Moreover, fourth-placed Manchester City still have two games in hand, which means they can be the Premier League leaders as well and hold a six-point lead over Liverpool.
Rodgers is confident his side can take on the challenges this season, especially if Suarez continues with his red-hot form.
“Well, it helps when you have a team and a squad,” Rodgers said in his post-match news conference after Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Southampton.
“Luis has been sensational but I think everyone last week was saying he scored four goals in the last 33 goals that we have scored, but he's a huge influence in the team.
“But today was very much about the squad and the collective. Everybody had to do their job, the goalkeeper made a great save and we looked a real threat going forwards.”
Suarez returned to Liverpool this season after serving his 10-match ban. The former Ajax player has scored 24 goals in 23 appearances for Liverpool this season and is on course to become the top goal scorer in the Premier League this season.
Rodgers also praised Liverpool’s attack for recording another phenomenal performance. Liverpool are currently the top goalscoring side in the Premier League, with more than 70 goals to their name. Manchester City are the second highest goalscoring team in the Premier League.
