As if things weren't going bad enough for Roger Clemens what with the steroid allegations and a federal perjury probe, now there's this wonderful nugget of information that has leaked out.Clemens apparently had a 10-year affair with country singer Mindy McCready.
Now, you're probably saying to yourself, so what? A lot of athletes have affairs. True. But here's the critical detail. The romance supposedly began when McCready was a 15-year-old aspiring singer performing in a karaoke bar and Clemens was a 28-year-old Red Sox ace and married father of two.
I felt dirty just writing that last sentence. Here are some of the slightly unpleasant details provided by the New York Daily News.
Clemens was with his Red Sox teammates in a Fort Myers, Fla., bar when then-teenager McCready caught his eye. After Clemens threw a shirt with his and several teammates' signatures onstage, an introduction was made.
"It was love at first sight, no doubt about it," said a source with intimate knowledge of the relationship.
Yikes. Clemens has denied that he ever had a sexual relationship with McCready, but if you believe that, then you probably believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny - and that Clemens never used HGH and steroids. This guy is so full of s*** it's coming out his ears at this point."It was love at first sight, no doubt about it," said a source with intimate knowledge of the relationship.
But my favorite part of the story was this. During an outing in New York, Clemens and McCready partied with Monica Lewinsky and Michael Jordan, with McCready even bumming a cigar off Jordan to give to Clemens. That must have been one interesting night, to say the least.
What all this means, aside from the fact that Clemens is a lying scumbag, is that Clemens' defamation suit against McNamee is in serious trouble now. As any legal expert will tell you, when you sue for defamation, you put your reputation on the line. The individual being sued can bring out anything they want to further sully your reputation, especially if, like Clemens, you say you've been a "family man" when you've actually been out shacking up with underage country stars. McNamee could easily subpoena McCready (who by the way, is well past her prime at this point) or any of the people who were familiar with the affair - and it was a pretty open one - to bury Clemens.
My guess is that this will officially kill Clemens' career. Clemens knew if he came back this year, he'd have to deal with HGH and steroid chants, but with this story having leaked out now, he'd also have to deal with pedophilia chants as well.
By the way, even as a Giants fan, I never thought I'd see anyone pass Barry Bonds on the scumbag list, but man, I think Clemens just managed to do it.
