It appears that Jay Mariotti's bogus reasoning for his departure, that newspapers are going the way of the Dodo Bird, hasn't set well with Roger Ebert
. Ebert points out one of the many despicable things Mariotti has done when he wrote, "Your timing was exquisite. You signed a new contract, waited until days after the newspaper had paid for your trip to Beijing at great cost, and then resigned with only an email. You saved your explanation for a local television station." Of course, his mistake here is assuming that his real reason for quitting was the one he offered on TV. That was giving Mariotti too much credit because the real reason he quit was that he had to take his turn to write a column, as he always had to.
Sounds like Jay is lucky Ebert is up there in years and of fragile health, otherwise Mariotti could add one more name to the list of people liable to kick his ass.
