Monday Night Tennis doesn't exactly have the same cachet as Monday night football, but I'll be the last guy complaining that we get a US Open men's tennis final as an appetizer for the doubleheader of football later in the evening.
It's been a disappointing year for Roger Federer's standards, but with a win tonight in New York, he'll grab his 13th career grand slam title. That's just one shy of Pete Sampras' record 14. Not bad for so-called down year.
Here's a statistic that's truly staggering: Federer has now participated in the final in 13 of the last 14 grand slam events.
We expected Roger to make it this far, but what we didn't expect is the man across the net. Andy Murray is the No. 6 seed, so he's hardly a sleeper, but the way in which he knocked off No. 1 Rafael Nadal was eye-opening. At age 21, Murray could very well begin to fill the void left by Federer whenever he cools down, but for now let's still enjoy his game while he pursues Sampras' career mark.
