One small step for Federer, one giant leap for Oxfam
Avid gambler and tennis fan Nick Newlife placed a £1,520 bet back in 2003 that Federer would win Wimbledon 7 times. He got 66-to-1 odds, resulting in a £101,840 payout. That's the equivalent of over $150,000.
Newlife died back in 2009, but he left everything to Oxfam, a charitable organization that provides emergency care throughout the world, tries to help famine situations, and provides developmental aid.
Now, his 9-year old bet has resulted in that $150,000 prize going right to Oxfam, where it will be used for a good cause.
According to Oxfam, the money is enough to feed 10,000 people for a month in west Africa, where there is a food crisis.
Great move by the late Mr. Newlife, and huge thanks to Federer for making it happen, whether he realized it or not.
