Roger Goodell Orders Green Bay Packers To Shop Brett Favre And Solve This Mess
Goodell Laying Down The Law, Shining A Light At The End Of The Tunnel For The Favre Fiasco
ESPN's Chris Mortensen has reported that the Packers have officially started working to get Brett Favre out of town. With the recent trades of Jeremy Shockey and Jason Taylor, it's looking like Favre might be the 3rd big name traded this week. Commissioner Roger Goodell is as sick of this fiasco as the rest of us, and wants the Packers to settle it ASAP.

It's a bit convenient for the Packers that Shockey and Taylor were traded so recently, as it gives them a good idea of what the market should be for Favre. The Giants received 2nd and 5th round picks for Shockey, and the Dolphins got 2nd and 6th round picks from the Redskins for Taylor. As a future Hall of Fame QB who will not only bring more wins, but more fans to whichever team he plays for, Favre may hold even more value.

The two most popular picks for Favre destinations are Minnesota and Tampa Bay. The Packers would almost certainly not allow Favre to stay within the division, combined with the fact that they're accusing the Vikings of tampering, so we might as well take them off the list. And although Favre has reportedly claimed that it is too hot in Tampa Bay, he may not have a choice, if he wants to play this year.

If I were Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen, I would be on the phone with the Packers, offering next years 2nd and 5th round picks. It's more than what the Redskins gave up for Jason Taylor, who is another player who will only be around for another year, possibly two. But the Bucs desperately need a QB, and a guy like Favre just might be enough to make them a legitimate contender.

Joe Theismann has also weighed in and thinks that Favre's familiarity with Gruden's offense makes Tampa a good fit. Theismann believes it's Tampa or bust for Favre, and puts Favre's odds of going to the Bucs or retiring at 50-50.

Other teams that I would like to see make a run for Favre:

49ers - Alex Smith clearly isn't the answer here. They have some good young talent on defense, and a great RB in Frank Gore, who could give Favre just enough of a ground threat to open up the passing game.

Ravens - Until Joe Flacco takes over, Favre could be a viable solution. The Ravens have solid veteran WR's, a good RB in McGahee, and a potentially elite defense. They could instantly become favorites in the AFC North with the addition of Favre.

Bills - Can you imagine Brett Favre throwing to Lee Evans, Josh Reed, and rookie James Hardy? Me neither. Of course, being in the same division as the Patriots, at best they'll be a wild card.

Roger Goodell overstepping his boundaries?  Go figure, never would've guess he'd do that.

Not to be a nitpicker (because God knows I hate nits) but the Ravens are in the AFC North and I think that they wouldn't necessarily be the favorite but they would be much improved.

You really think the Steelers, Bengals and Browns are really all that good? The Ravens had a pretty talented team last year, despite their record, and the QB situation was an absolute mess. With the ability and the confidence that Favre brings to the table, I think they could be the team to beat in the division.

Yes......but look at it from his point of view. The season opens we have great games all through week one with great performance after another. But what is all over the paper and ESPN. Pictures of Brett sitting on the sidelines in a Packers uniform. That would be a year long distraction that the NFL doesn't need right now.

Just my opinion of the situation. But hey I'm a Dolphins fan so leave Brett where he is. Anything to keep the attention away from Miami.

And to piggy-back on what Kappa said... is there really anyone who DOESN'T want this resolved? Whether or not it's within his boundaries, I think it's something that most people would have done, if they were in his shoes.

I'm going to have to say that no team should be interested in Favre at this point. Because of his indecisiveness in retirement or wanting to come back, he has become more of a distraction than TO ever has been.

I want this to be resolved, especially since its effecting my team and my favorite player's legacy, but Goodell has no place in this.  If the Packers and Favre can't resolve this then its on them and them only.  Its not going to be a stain on the NFL's image if this doesn't work out.

Yes but it takes the focus off of the NFL's season. Look at past issues T.O., Spygate, the Bengals, etc...... What is the first thing they show about the NFL in those situations the person or persons and their issues not the NFL.

I understand where you are coming from as you and the rest of Lambeau faithful are in the worst position of them all........you are fans.

But Roger overstepping or not needs a smooth season without any extra things for the media to run with(they have enough already). The media is who is blowing this thing up like a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon.

What about Hotlanta?....

I think Roger should have kept it shut until Brett applied for reinstatement ... but whatever.  Everyone wants to see it resolved regardless.

People really have been snowballed believing that Aaron is at this time better than Favre.  It really is funny how naive fans can be.  This is corruption and big money people wake up Pack Fans.  Ted is wrong and McCArthy is the puppet.

He is the commish - it is his league and his responsibility to make sure that it runs smoothly and efficiently.  It looks and sounds like a very logical move - if you left it solely up to Farve and the Packers this would be going on through Thanksgiving!

He needs to request his reinstatement first. Then it will be interesting where he ends up. His 12 million dollar salary is gonna take some teams out of the running unless he re-does his deal, that probably would add some years onto it. But I cant see him traded to a NFC North team. Raven are out, IMO. I would venture to say he would end up in Tampa. Gruden loves to collects QB's. Plus he would be the best one on that roster.

OK, I guess this Buccaneers fan will wade in: The sentimental side of me says, "No way, my dream has come true! No.4 roaming the backfield, and he'll get Sapp to un-retire too! Awesome!"
But, the realist in me says, "Gruden couldn't stand sharing the spotlight with Favre. He'll wilt under the heat (I KNOW he's from Mississippi), whereas the cold slows down the opponents and evens the athletic table a bit. He will be behind a line that, while better than most people think, still struggle in their pass blocking. He'll be throwing to old WR's, not a young talented stable of stud WR's. Disaster might be too strong of a word, but it wouldn't be pretty."
All that said, if Tampa Bay could steal him for say, a third and a fourth round pick. Hell. Go for it.

I got no problem with Brett going to the commish... any QB who put in 16 years to one team and is getting the stroke like this from the franchise should be able to step into the league office for some backup... the pack front office playing the crying game with tampering charges...  now that is the real sham...

Really does not matter if Brett went to the commish or not. GB is has not been directed or under any obligation to do anything with Favre. They own his rights and can either keep him or trade him. If they feel so inclined they can make him a 12 million dollar back up. The tampering charges while may seem like a petty move, is legit. NFL rules state that another team can not talk with a player under contract about moving teams. WHile I dont think anything will come of it. Its a tactical move on GB's part. This will end Favre trying to force his move.

The Ravens have a lot of issues to deal with and quarterback is just one of them. The secondary is improved but it was terrible last year and it remains to be seen whether or not the improvements will work or not. Terrell Suggs is not a happy camper as he was franchised and has yet to report. I don't think that is enough to disrupt the defense which is a year older now and is an odd mix of young guys and players that are nearing the end. Ed Reed is great but he can't do it all. The offense is learning a brand new system and their could be some growing pains. The bottom line, Favre would makes this team better but not enough to say they would be the favorites. Pittsburghs offensive line will struggle but their defense should be strong. Cleveland improved as much as anyone this offseason. Cincy is a mess but it is a talented mess. IF Favre went to B-more (where I live BTW) they would make it a four team race with no clear favorite...
