Some of you, all of you, or perhaps none of you have been wondering about Brett Favre's reinstatement. Didn't he send Goodell the letter last week? And shouldn't something have been done by now?The answer to both questions is yes. But because Goodell is essentially the dictator of the NFL, he can do whatever he wants, and he's decided that he'll finally act on Favre's reinstatement on Monday. Or at least hopefully.
Frankly, I even think Goodell is starting to look like an idiot by delaying this thing, and hopefully he realizes that and does indeed act on Monday.
Provided Goodell does that, the Packers and Favre will have 24 hours from then to come to some agreement.
Currently, Favre is seriously considering a marketing deal that would pay him $25 million over 10 years. There is, however, one problem with the deal, in that it doesn't let him get back on the field.
Obviously, should Favre nix that deal, he pretty much holds the keys to this mess. If the Packers try and trade him to a place he doesn't want to go, even though Favre doesn't have a no trade clause he can simply refuse to report to the team he's been traded to. That then reverts his rights back to the Packers, who then have to go through the whole mess again. And if he ultimately decides to go back to the Packers, who owe him a ton of money, he'll cause an insane media frenzy, likely split the team's loyalties, and waste valuable cap space by riding the pine, all things which Green Bay obviously doesn't want to see happen.
So, in reality, if Favre doesn't accept the marketing deal, and I don't think he will, then I really do think we'll see the Packers deal him to the Vikings or the Bears. It's clear at this point that Packers management has made a committment to Aaron Rodgers and they aren't backing down from that, even if that means trading Favre to a division rival.
The Packers have already considered trading Favre to either the Vikings or Bears as a "last resort." Which is exactly where I think they'll be on Monday.
The simple truth is that if Green Bay wants to get anything out of this mess at this point in time, they have no choice but to trade Favre to the Vikings or Bears.
