Greg Schiano's idea for eliminating kickoffs is... interesting, to say the least

Blog Photo - Roger Goodell wants to get rid of kickoffs altogether in the NFLIn one of the more innovative proposals in recent memory, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is floating the idea that was originally proposed by Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano that would completely eliminate kickoffs from NFL football games.

From ESPN:
Goodell and [head of the league's competition committee Rich] McKay discussed an idea brought up by Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano in which a team, instead of kicking off, would get the ball at its own 30-yard line in a fourth-and-15 situation. The team then would punt the ball away or, to replace an onside kick, could go for it and, if they failed to get a first down, the opposing squad would start with great field position.

This would completely change the game, and could also result in some more late-game comebacks.

Instead of an onside kick, which is a pretty tough task, teams would just have to make a 15-yard gain in order to keep the ball after a score. Granted, that's also a tough task, but it might be a little easier than recovering an onside kick.

Another thing to consider: What about coaches like Bill Belichick, who has supreme confidence in his offense, and is willing to take chances? Would we see him "go for it" 10 times every game, under these new rules? Sure, it would risk giving the other team great field position, but with that offense, it might be worth taking the shot, if it can get you 3 or 4 scores in a row.

What do you think about this new proposal?

Great ideas.................I have a few of my own that might fit Mr Goodells philosophy  also.

What if they shortened the field and moved it inside of sports arenas?
How about putting handles on all defensive players shoulder pads.
All defensive linemen must count to five Mississippi before rushing the passer.
Eliminate tackling all together.........Have the offensive players wear a flag that the defense has to remove.

Now that is funny.

Why stop there lets move the ball back to the 1 yrd line and let the team have two series to get the ball past t midfield or they reset at the 5rd with 3 and 15 and if they cannot make it past midfield then, it is a turn over. I do not think they should punt the ball anymore either let the offense have to throw the ball like we did when we were little kids. Take the kicking out of the game completely. Wait we can also take out field goals and have it where the QB has to throw the ball in moving baskets that are 25 or 30 yrs away. I love it just love it., just like MLB changing things and watch were excited then as time went on they just did not care about the league anymore so we fans of the NFL. Great idea Roger.

It is intriguing. But a punt is not that much safer. And why 4th and 15? why  not just 4th and 10? Maybe Roger G. and the league could conduct a test run, do it during preseason games. If it works good if not, then it is business as usual with the regular season.

Hate it. Want nothing to do with it as a fan. Special teams (on kickoffs) plays a big part in so many games. Can't get rid of it.
