Not that this is shocking news at all, but it looks like Romeo Crennel is now officially on his last legs as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. ESPN's Chris Mortensen (so take this with a grain of salt) is reporting that Crennel will need a miracle finish with Derek Anderson at quarterback to save his own job. And considering the Browns lost 10-6 today to the Colts, that miracle better show up real soon.
You may remember that Crennel just a week ago named Brady Quinn the starter for the 2009 season, so obviously that makes things a bit awkward with Anderson now. I'm sure Anderson is thrilled to have the opportunity to go out there and win what's lest of Cleveland's games so that he can save Crennel's job...and then immediately get benched by him next year.
But let's be honest, with the way Anderson has played this year, we might as well just say Crennel has already been fired.
Apparently the people on the short list to replace Crennel are Bill Cowher, Marty Scottenheimer, and coordinators like the Jets' Brian Schottenheimer, the Giants' Steve Spagnuolo, the Titans' Jim Schwartz, the Falcons' Mike Mularkey and the Ravens' Rex Ryan.
Obviously, it's no secret that everyone in Cleveland is hoping the Browns can snag Cowher, but I'd be a little surprised if he took the job. Cowher has made it clear a few times recently that he isn't all that interested in coaching right now and seriously, why in the hell would he want to coach the Browns? You'd think Cowher would be a more likely candidate to step in and replace a coach who has a talented, but underachieving team. The Browns, in all honesty, really aren't that talented.
It's now completely apparent that last year's 10-6 Browns squad was a team that benefitted heavily from a very favorable schedule. It's going to take a lot before this team threatens to get anywhere close to that win total again.
As for Crennel, one would assume he'll go right back to being a coordinator. He never quite seemed to fit the mold of a coach anyway. His clock management skills were almost Andy Reid-ish in their awfulness and Crennel never seemed to have complete control of the team, as evidenced by the fact that it was reportedly the front office that forced him to eventually start Brady Quinn over Derek Anderson.
Anyway, it looks like Crennel could actually be hitting the market at the same time as Charlie Weis. I don't think many people would have predicted that when both these guys became head coaches back in 2005.
