As I'm sure many of you know, I'm in the camp that wants to see the Lions go 0-16. But I've recently begun to think about this and find myself wondering if maybe my personal desire to see history made is in fact somewhat malevolent in nature.
After all, what exactly does any of us who are rooting for this team to go 0-16 have against the Lions? There's nothing I find particularly objectionable about coach Rod Marinelli. I know he's doing his best to help this team win a game. And I know that Calvin Johnson, who has somehow managed to accumulate over 1000 yards receiving this year while being thrown to by John Kitna, Dan Orlovsky, and Duante Culpepper, is deserving of incredible praise. He will one day be one of the best receivers to ever play this game, and it seems wrong for him to have the stain of an 0-16 season on his resume. I also know the Lions punter, Nick Harris, and I feel somewhat weird rooting against a guy who helped me learn how to punt a football.
Many other guys on the team are good guys as well. They aren't like Dominic Raiola, who's openly challenging fans to a fight. There are guys like Mike Furrey, who keep their mouths shut, play hard, and do charity work in the community. They try to win even though they haven't been very successful and on top of all this they're getting jeered by their own fans at home. There's certainly something noble about their commitment to keep going out there and fighting despite the fans and the odds, if also slightly despressing.
And the truth is that for a tiny bit of enjoyment on our end, this is something that will stick with these players, these coaches, and this organization, forever. They will always be known as the first team ever to go 0-16.
Then again, they are all getting paid. I could certainly take abuse from fans for 6-months a year for a few million.
But in addition to that more cynical side, what this really is about is history. Humans love history, even if we consistently fail to learn from it. And it's even more compelling to watch history happen in person, even if it's simply from a TV screen. Neil Armstrong on the moon, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Space Shuttle Challenger. Most people only witnessed those events on TV, but they were still historic moments, nonetheless.
While the Lions going 0-16 isn't anywhere near those previously mentioned events, it's still something unique, because no NFL team has ever gone 0-16 in a single season before. And now, we're so close that we can taste it. The chance to witness history is on the line. Sure, this isn't necessarily a happy historical thing to see happen, but historical moments aren't always warm and fuzzy, and they aren't always the thing you want to be known for. After all, what is Napoleon best known for? Not founding a French empire from a floundering mess and being a military genius, but instead his crushing defeat at Waterloo.
So despite my reservations, I want to see the Lions go 0-16. I want to see history made, even if it comes at some peoples' expense. After all, this is the chance to see history be made, which is pretty rare. Let this season be the Lions' Waterloo. And because in the end, if there's any organization that should be pegged with that symbol of ineptitude, it's this one.
