Golf prodigy Rory McIlroy has declared a permanent departure from Europe to the United States. This jaw dropping news has just been revealed after the superstar informed he had to live under 24-hour protection of guards at his home in Northern Ireland because of aggressively obsessive fans.
McIlroy told media that his obsessive fans were the fundemental reason behind his decision. The 22-year-old who just recently came to fame after winning the US Open in June revealed he had to hire a team of ex-SAS guards to keep him safe at his home.
The star admitted that this was also one of the main reasons he has decided to join the US Tour next season. While talking to an American TV show McIlroy stated, “I have had security guards at my house every night since I won the US Open patrolling around the area. It is something that I just had to put in place I'm afraid. There have been people driving up the driveway and stuff which isn't very nice.”
He added, “It’s tough but it is just the world we live in unfortunately. If you're in the position we're in you're so public.”
The Northern Irishman further informed that he will keep membership of both tours for the year 2012. This means McIlroy will have to play just 3 tournaments in Europe. That is apart from the Majors and WGC events, which happen to account towards the standings on both sides of the Atlantic, United States and Europe.
Sources have revealed that McIlroy might soon be hosting his house warming party. Their information comes after they discovered McIlroy went house hunting in Orlando, Florida. McIlroy was probably trying to befriend compatriot and fellow US Open winner Graeme McDowell by becoming his neighbor. Now however, McIlroy has ventured out of Orlando and is instead looking for a place in West Palm Beach, near Miami.
McIlroy is also expected to contradict his statement of spending just around “three or four months a year” at his new home. The reason behind that would be the amazingly low tax rates of Florida. With perks like that McIlroy will certainly be pondering over becoming Stateside full time.
McIlroy has been climbing the stairs to the upper echelons for some time now therefore it is impressive the amount of fame young McIlroy has gathered for himself. The young star admitted that it comes as a massive shock to become famous so quickly, as in his case by playing at the Congressional.
Nevertheless McIlroy still has to prove a lot. His famous victory came after McIlroy had a melt down two months before he won the trophy. At The Masters in Augusta McIlroy blew a third round lead to achieve a lack lustrous spot. Since then McIlroy has kept his form growing to the point of becoming the gallery’s apple of the eye.
On the issue McIlroy commented, “When you grow up and dream of winning Majors, all you think about is the golf and playing in front of big crowds on unbelievable courses and winning trophies. But people driving on your driveway and other stuff like that? You never think about that other side of it and that is the bit that takes a bit of getting used to.”
He continued, “There are times when you're sitting in a restaurant and thinking it would be nice to go back to the days when people didn't want to have their photograph taken with you, but that's fine, I really don't mind that.” McIlroy concluded, “If they weren't interested it would mean I was going backwards and that really would be the time to worry!”
