Royce White and The Invisible (But Real) Disease

Royce White, a former University of Minnesota recruit (I say recruit because he never actually played a game for them), recently agreed to a deal with the Houston Rockets.  The Rockets drafted White back in June but the two sides hadn’t been able to come to a deal due to White’s mental health concerns.   One of White’s main mental health concerns is that main he has been diagnosed with anxiety disorder and has difficulty riding on airplanes, among other issues.

Since being drafted White has struggled to have the Rockets accept him for him and acknowledge that his disorder is a real problem.  Some of the problem is America’s general perception of mental health. It isn’t something that can be turned on or off like a light switch, White just can’t choose to “suck it up” and ride in an airplane just like one can’t choose to cure himself of Cancer.
