Royce White chooses bus travel over flying to games
But Royce White, who suffers from extreme anxiety attacks and particular fear of flying, believes he got it the answer to the problem – private bus travel.
Royce White claims that that travelling to games by bus will assist in his battle against anxiety. The former Illinois State star also believes that bus travel and will inevitably help to develop consistency, so that he may be one day able to open up to flying.
“What it’s going to look like is every game that’s drivable. I’m going to get a bus for myself,” stated Royce White. “And I’m going to make that bus feel like home… and make sure that my stress levels stay low and that my rest is regular and that my meals are regular.”
Royce White added that it will help to develop a “level of consistency in a job where inconsistency is very apparent because of the schedule.”
Apparently, Royce White’s voice hasn’t been lost to the Houston Rockets, as the team has invested much time and money in the player and proven their willingness to cooperate at every level by patiently working out a solution.
“We are committed to Royce’s long-term success and we will continue to support him now and going forward,” stated the Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey.
However, flying is the most convenient and effective method of transporting the whole team from one game to another, and Royce White’s choice of travel will leave the Houston Rockets on the drawing board as they try to map-out a schedule that matches the whole team’s routine.
Still Royce White tried to theorize that “conceptually” bus travel and “flying” served the same purpose.
“I don’t think getting a bus is actually any more convenient for me,” Royce White even acknowledged at a later stage. “It’s actually more inconvenient for me to take a longer trip, but for me, specifically, it works well.”
He’s been very open about the whole issue and even cleared out the issue on upon his introductory conference following being drafted by the Houston Rockets in June.
"Here’s how it goes. I’m scared (going) to the airport, I’m scared going up,” Royce White blatantly stated. “I’m uncomfortable in the air and I feel like a million bucks when we hit the runway."
Since, Royce White laid claims that the Houston Rockets had taken “positive strides” to promote his “health.”
Nevertheless, there is still no timetable for Royce White’s projected return, and this issue is proving to be a real head-scratcher for the Huston Rockets, with the next Wednesday’s preseason opener against Oklahoma City Thunders inching even closer.
